I just can't seem to wait for a couple of years for the technology to get better. Hell if that were the case I wouldn't have a computer. I've decided on the i-art 4-1 system. It's only a hundred bucks. I've been going thru all of my games to visualize what 3D vision would do to them and I think I'm in for a real treat. I wrote .bat files for all of my games to set up setk6 and it gives me about a 5-8% frame rate boost. I was really suprised! Ok, My dilemma. My monitor specs: 30-96Khz, 48-120hz .25-.27mm pitch. 3D card: Voodoo3/3000pci I set all the refresh rates to the maximum allowable. 800x600 is at 120hz, 1024x768 is at 100hz. here's the kicker, the max refresh I can get for 960x720 is 85hz. By the math I should be able to get 120hz. I even went into the voodoo3.inf file and it list the max rate at 85hz. Any ideas? I've tried a couple of third party refresh utilitys to no avail. I'd like to play my games at a the highest resolution I can get with 120hz. Any input from you or the learned members of the group would be appreciated. Thanks, John | ||

Have you tried HZtools? If you go the Stereovision.net site and enter their FAQ section for Nvidia boards, there is a link to HZtools. It offers direct control for every refresh rate. It's worked well for my Nvidia GTS board which makes changing the refresh rate unavailable and it is not made just for Nvidias. | ||

If you have a Voodoo3 board you'll have to use the Wicked3D driver. This driver uses sync-doubler technology. You can only use refresh rates from 60 to 80 Hz there. The sync-doubler will double this frequency to 120 to 160 Hz. What's important about the 960x720 mode anyway? By the way - your monitor may do higher vertical frequencies than the specs indictate. If it's a 96 kHz (horizontal) it should do more on the horizontal. My 86 kHz H monitor does 120 Hz V according to the specs, but 160 Hz V in reality. Christoph | ||

Yea I tried the HZtools. it didn't work. I also modified my .inf files to set the timings for 960x720 to 100hz and 120hz. boy was that a mistake!!! After the Windows boot screen the monitor shut off. I had to "safe mode" start the machine, uninstall Voodoo3 and remove the card from my device manager, then reinstall it to get it to work again. Voodoo must have software motification protection in the .cat file. I guess 800x600 is the best I'm going to get at 120hz. Maybe I'll drop another note to 3Dfx and try to get an answer other than a reference to their FAQ page. See ya, John | ||

So what you're saying is that I wasted all this time trying to get a higher refresh rate out of this monitor when I could have been working on my "honey do" list. Darn!;-) At least I learned alot about my monitor, And time spent learning is never time wasted... |
