Okay, this is where all you folks get to laugh at an unskilled newbie -- I bought a VFX-1 back in the mid-90s. Played a few hundred hours of Quake and Descent. Kinda lost its charm. Is now sitting in the attic in its original box with all the documentation/hardware. Unfortunately, Forte (now IISVR, as I'm sure you all know) doesn't want to talk about how to hook it up to an AGP video accelerator -- I've been told it can't be done. I'd like to fiddle with it some -- I'm considering everything from building one of the converter boxes to buying and installing a friend's PCI Monster Fusion 16 and using it as a second monitor in Windows, and connecting the VFX to that. My system is a PIII-450 w/320 megs ram, and an AGP4x GeForce2MX running Windows 2000 professional client edition. I do have ISA slots, but I don't believe any VIP drivers exist for Win2k. I have some limited programming and soldering experience, but nowhere near the level it seems most of you folks have). So my question really I guess is: Is this worth trying? Do I have enough skill to be able to do anything? Or should I just cut my losses and e-bay the thing? |

If you wait I think several of us are close to a solution. It can be done, it just depends on how much effort you want to put it to it. -Kevin |

What's the average cost/time to get the components for a video converter box and assemble it? I assume headtracking would require some additional stuff.. mrk.. |

I bought the half of the vfx system at e-bay with the vip card missing. So far, I didn`t manage to get the card ..... I would like to build a black box which connects the helmet directly (without the vip) to a standart agp card. I just want to use it to monitor and operate my audio pc system (win 98) while performing with my band on a stage (way cool).Apparently some of you are exactly working on that. Any news & tech specs & diagramms would make my day! mail me please ...... |

R Spicer, We're right in the middle of finding resources for parts and designing a PCB for the linkbox. When we are finished it looks like the linkbox will be selling for around 250 to 300 dollars without tracking. The system will have the hardware capablitily of tracking. Therefore you could send the unit back in for a software upgrade and tracking would be avialable. -Kevin |

I got my VFX1 to work in a Celeron 300a system with an AGP video card. I didn't have to do anything special, just plug it in. Its a ATI all-in-wonder 2x AGP card. Rage Pro chipset I belive.. E-mail me for specifics or post here. belrophon@hotmail.com |

Better video boards? I'm currently running my VFX1 off of a Hercules Stingray 128/3D with a VooDoo Rush chipset. Does anybody know of a newer (or just less buggy) video board that has a VESA feature connector? I've got a TNT2 board that appears to have a feature connector but does'nt work. Untill link box problems are resolved I'd like to improve the play of European Air War with a new video card. Thanks ahead of time. |
