I know this is the 3D boards, but I could not find a better place to ask my questions so I try them here. I am thinking of buying one of them projectors in the near future, for home-use only. I want to play my games with them, and was wondering if the projectors currently on the market in the 2500-4000 dollar range (iiyama has one, Philips and Epson have a couple) are any good for this? What is the most important thing to keep in mind of these projectors: Lumen, Resolution/number of pixels, Scanning frequency, type of LCD? The Iiyama projector for instance has a "true" resolution of 1024x768 which seems pretty good, while a few others only seem to be able to cope with 800x600 (not good enough for me). I plan to play in a truly darkened room, will a projector with 700 lumen suffice then? Or should I at least go for the 1000 lumen ones. And how do I interpret the "contrast ratio"number of these projectors? Ah, much questions! Basically I am asking, if I want good immersion and a sharp image on my wall of at least 60-90 inches diagonal, what should I look for? And is it all possible, or do these projectors give unnimersive blurry, flaky images still? Thanks in advance! Mike Ubbink. |

In a truely darkened room 700 lumens would be sufficient. I have a 1000 lumens projector which is very bright in a dark environment. I would go for at least 1024 x 768 and for my money I would buy DLP as opposed to LCD (others may argue). Projector images are VERY sharp, but the problem with immersion is the closer your get to the screen the more of the projected image you will block out unless you go with rear projection. |

Hello, for mono-use are these projectors ok, if you want to play stereo you 've to decide between passive stereo with two beamers or active stereo (for active stereo you need are very fast projector, althoug very expensive). |

On the subject of projectors has anyone used one of these? It claims to have a 120Hz vertical refresh rate. http://www.consumer.philips.com/global/b2c/ce/catalog/assets/downloads/lc3131_41_74_lft.pdf |

@patrick This refresh rates are the possible input rates for the beamer. That are not the refresh rates of the DLP of the beamer. If you put a page-flipping vga-signal to a beamer you will get "nonsens". I don't know how they manage it inside. |

Thanks for the answers! I have checked on a view, and have been playing abit with projector distances and screendiagonals. Seems if you put your prjector at 3 meters from the wall, you get something like a 98-124 inch diagonal. Sounds big enough to me. Now I was wondering, if you hang your projector of the ceiling, and go sit, lets say, 2 meters from the wall, will the beam slice through your head? I guess it depends also how high you hang it, but how about distortion of the image, when hangin it from the ceiling? Also, when viewing a 100 inch(diagonal) image from 2 meters distance, what exactly does this for immersion? (assuming you do not block any of the image, since that seems a real immersion killer to me). I am guessing it will be something like viewing a movie in the cinema (somewhat) but does this kind viewing work for actually playing games too? Or just for kicking back lazily and watch your DvD's? I intedn to play mmorpgs(both fantasy and sci-fi) with it, and a couple of FPS's. If you can circumvent the "blocking"problem, is the investment worth it, or will I be turning to my (22'') Iiyama monitor all the time, to get a *really* good look at the game. I am curious if anyone ever played mmorpgs with this, and what his experiences are. Thanks! |

My question is this: When are the projector companies going to do the intelligent thing and build projectors that are designed to project onto the cieling for us couch potatoes. I want to lie on the couch and watch TV! |

I have a few friends working in the industry and they're telling me not to buy any new projectors at this stage especially for the amount of dvds I whatch, I whatch about 3 on average on the weekend and they said the amount of hours will result in to many lamp changes to frequently which could end up being very costly |
