Diaobuaa,
For front projection I use 5mm MDF with white coating, and paint it with a metallic paint sold in hobby stores. I have experience with Creall metallic paint silver no. 20, made by Havo (www.havo.com), but there are probably many other paints that will do. Look for a paint with matt finish.
I cannot offer right now any good solution for rear projection screen.
Hope this helps.

MDF- Medium Density Fibreboard

I have used hardboard to make a small screen.
standard hardboard sheet is finished on one side and has a textured underside, and is available in various finishes and thicknesses, the most common being 3.2mm.

Hardboard and MDF are available from all good hardware, Home improvemnet, DIY stores.

OK, Ged gave a full answer.
The thing is that the paint will usually shrink, and therefore deform the surface. Therefore, you need a material with some structural stability. I did not experiment with hardboard, but I suspect that at 3.2mm thickness it is less stable than MDF. Moreover, I think MDF is cheaper. I made a 1mx1m screen from 5mm MDF and there was no visible deformation.

I painted hardboard (3.2mm) with aluminium paint. Paint was thermal paint ment to metal surfaces but it worked fine on hardboad. It's sold here in Finland as 0.3 dl cans for 10€.

My screen is quite large (2.25m x 1.7m). I thought to make somekind of frame to it afterwards.

Problem is how to achieve even paint surface with no brush strokes. I'm planning to use airbrush next time..

Which type of painting have you used?
