Wow guys... I've been experimenting with some software I'm developing and I'm so far getting better than expected results. I do, personally, use a VirtuaTrack for my head tracking unit; however, I got to thinking tonight... would it be possible (with a decent web cam) to create software than can take images from the webcam and detect your face and the changing in direction. From there, it will move your cursor accoring to direction, and depending on how fast and far you turn your head. So far, it's working better than I expected; however, I luckily stumbled upon a webcam that can easily record at 30FPS. Anything even remotely slower I think would be impossible to use. Even refreshing the cursor at 30 times per second displays choppiness in cursor movement... but hey, it's a start (for those people who can't currently afford $300 + on a head tracking unit). Again, I'm still programming it... and testing it out. If and when I think it's worth releasing... I will. However, there will be some obvious draw backs. First is CPU resource... it takes more CPU power to pull an image from the webcam and process the image than it does to pull readings from a head-tracking unit. I have the latest Intel 3.06Ghz (overclocked to 3.45Ghz), so I can't tell if that'll be an issue on older system... but I can estimate that it would be. Also, since i-glasses and other visors don't cover the whole periphial area of vision... I try to use my set as much as possible in the dark. This way, I won't be destracted from outside movements, etc. Of course, a webcam has a hard time detecting a face in the dark... so this is currently out of the question. Anyhow, I'll keep you guys posted. Again, I got to thinkin'... if face movement detection can be done using software like 3D Facestation, etc., then why not for headtracking in games? We'll see folks! |

Check out cam2pan ( http://www.mousevision.com/ ) - they have an excellent webcam-based headtracker that uses around 5% of my CPU time. It even comes with settings for IL2 Sturmovik so that it auto-centers properly. I love it. |

Haha... well, at least I wasn't the first with the idea. Almost thought I was crazy at first... but it seems to be workin' better than I expected. Well, at least maybe I can try to make one BETTER than theres! Cheers! |

How does this compare to the trackIR in terms of performance? |

Next step: Put the camera on your head. |

"Next step: Put the camera on your head." Ah, here's an idea... how about stuffin' that sucker up your ass!? Better yet, it's probably so tight (tight ass) that you may start a new revolution! Crushing your existing webcam into a micro cam! Hey, there's an idea... so go run with it jackass! |

Sounds like you've got tunnel vision. |

Whee... tunnel vision is great! It'll give me a narrow viewing area, much like your new micro cam (once you clean the excess shit off). |

I heard of games where a webcam watchs you and extrats your picture and places it in the game as the character. |

No idea. I think it was for Nintendo's, maybe 4-5 years back. |

Speaking of game systems: I know that Halo 2 just came about but I can't believe how many Halo 2 cheats are at Xbox Cheats |

wouldn't adding a red LED (light emitting diode) on your head make processing images of a webcam not easyer ? Works in the dark and your program should only look for the movement of the red color. LEDs are cheap, little and dont consume much power. |

TrackIR now have a 6DOF tracking solution for their headtracker, it's called 'Vector Expansion' - most reviews seem positive. |

The best tracker I have ever used is a USB Tracker. Its nothing more than a converted Gyromouse, but it is superb. I used it with a set of svga i-glasses and found it to be faultless |

Would the head tracking be easier if you mounted colored balls on the edge of the glasses (ala motion capturing)? Just a thought... |

Hi, I'm working on the same with a green/red LED ring, its so i can grab and drag... Works on mac and windows, currently it tracks and you can grab a box and drop it again.. E-Mail me at computergraphics@gmail.com if you would like to try - specify whether your using a mac or pc. (you dont need a red and green led you can just click a color for it to track. -g |
