How hard would it be to make a homebrew HMD, given the person had some electronics experience? The way I understand it is this: You take the vga signal from the video card, with some electronics send it to the LCD panels. You alternate the vga output first from the left then to the right (like page flipping). Do it fast enough and no one could tell. The only other problem would be lenses (that might be a little hard...but not too much). Did I miss a bunch of stuff? LOL. I'm trying to understand why HMD's are so expensive and why there are no homebrew projects. Sure, the LCD panels cost allot. But the rest should be fairly cheap. I must be missing something... I guess my biggest gripe with all the expensive comercial units is that the Field of View is like 29 degrees or less (i-glasses)! Not much point in that really, I'd like a 45 degree FOV unit! |

By the way, I've seen some HMD's that have dual VGA inputs: http://www.trivisio.com/tech_3ScopeGoggles.html Would you just use two video cards? Or use some kind of box inbetween computer and dual input box? Anyone used these type of glasses before? |

I'm also doing some research in building my own HMD. The LCD are quite expensive if you want to go higher than 800x600.I found something around 10000 $ for 1280x1024. Also the big problem is that I cannot go higher than 50-60 degrees of FOV with that little LCD format ( about 22 mm diagonal)within acceptable image distortion level.I tried a lot of optics. I'm watching to the CRT solution.I've found a 2 inches 1024x768 res. With that size will be pretty much easy to go higher with FOV.Maybe something like 80 degrees. Also since is CRT I think that page flipping is possible and maybe you can use just one display with prisms for delivery the image to both eyes.Still waiting for the price though. |
