I finally saw Spy Kids 3D. It's been out a week, made $33 million US in that week, making it number one in the US by $10 million US. Not too bad, but that was an off week; Pirates of the Carabiean made $176 million in 3 week this summer, and there are still films in release that made over $330 million. http://movies.yahoo.com/boxoffice/latest/rank.html But it still may be enough to make other studios consider 3D, especially since updated 3D editing tools were made for SK3D. Risk is low right now. Yes, there were the red/green glasses. Yes, there was a hokey bit on when to put on your glasses. Yes, this is mostly a kids movie, with lots of computer generated graphics. So what? The 3D was not as 'over done' as I expected. The images were a bit dark (except for the CGI) in the 3D sequences. Not much ghosting. Not objectionable color bleed. I think any 3D fan should see it just for the fun and to support 3D to any extent they can. BTW, my 18 year old enjoyed it but my 15 year old said; "the 3D didn't work for me". The 3D at various IMAX and at Universal Islands of adventure, Disney and other IWERKS *DID* work fine for her; I'm not sure I understand the problem. She has played lots of shutter glasses games as well. She was serious. Anyone else seen a problem even seeing 3D with red/blue glasses? Anyway, go see the film, just don't expect too much. The theater I went to used red/cyan glasses. I also liked how they had an elastic strap to help hold them on. The part of the movie I saw the most ghosting in was the 'thumbs' sequence, but that may have been because it was in the beginning and my eyes had not adjusted yet. |

Could Color-Blindness cause her not to see it? I think so. Sometimes they just can't distinguish certain colors but all the others are fine. You should probably have her tested. An eye exam is cheap. |

Strike that LAST DUMB COMMENT! LOL. It shouldn't matter if someone is color blind should it? The filters do all the work, not the eyes or the brain. Perhaps it just wasn't very impressive to her. |

Why wouldn't color-blindness affect anaglyph 3-D? If your eyes can't distingish between the different colors, how can it seperate the picture into 3-D? |

It's a thought, but she has had a full eye test and wears contacts. Besides, 90% of colorblindness is orange/green, and 90% of that is in males. |

A person could see in monochrome and the anaglyph process would still work! As SamualT said "The filters do all the work" All the eyes see are two slightly different images, which the brain combines to perceive depth. |

Just came home from the movie theater, saw the movie. I pretty much agree with the initial poster. For anaglyph, it was not bad. Stupid movie of course, but heck, it is definitely not for my age group. I observed the audience, the kids definitely liked it. The movie will not make 3d more popular, but if the game becomes popular, it comes with the anaglyph glass, thus it is 3d. I wonder whether the game would allow to use my LCD glasses (instead of the anaglyph). If the game is done well, there is definitely a potential to make the kids ask for "more". The race (in the movie) reminded me to the best (up to date) stereoscopic game (besides Descent 1 of course) 3d game, the Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. As it happens, after a couple of years pause, I fired it up today and I "diagnosed" that yes, it is still the best 3d game. So, if they made Spy Kids 3d, the game, in any similar quality, we may see some movement toward 3d gaming. (Chris, do you remember, years ago I said, that the company which will make 3d popular, is the one which will package a glass with a popular game. Although I had LCD glass in mind, but still, we may just see the first step toward that). Gabor |

Just for the record there are much better anaglyph glasses available than the paper/gel glasses used by Miramax. This will become very obvious when the DVD comes out on Mar 4-2004. The image through a red gel filter is up to 7 times softer when the screen is close like a computer or tv. This is the effect of red being so far from cyan in the spectrum. The solution that we are offering Disney, Warners, Imax etc. is to use our "advanced anaglyph" Anachrome plastic glasses. They are diopter matched so that red and cyan focus identically when screen is small and close. Check out our info at www.anachrome.com Allan |

Back to the problem with the original posters daughter not being able to distinguish the 3d effects... I have a friend who has the same problem. We believe the problem has to do with eye dominance. He knows he is right eye dominant and we figure that his eyes are just focusing through the blue and not allowing the other eye to see through the red equally. He also has no problem with polorized 3d films but if eye dominance is the problem then he wouldnt have a problem as both lenses do the same thing. Just a guess. PS I saw Spy Kids 3d also, not a bad movie definately worth seeing to see the 3d effects. The 3d seemed to be more detailed and less ghosted than titanic: beyond the abyss and that was in polorized. |

I saw the movie at a theater and recently purchased the dvd. In my opinion it's much better at home than it was at the theater. Also, I watched some of it on my son's laptop and found it to look even better. Of course the red/blue glasses foul up the color in most cases. It would be great to see the polarized version, which Robert Rodreiges (spelling) says does exist. Arrggg....I wished all theaters were equiped with a silver screen and the capability to show polarized 3-d. |

First of all, perfect anaglyph movies are possible. I can't put three chapters of information in one paragraph (;-)), but let's just say, here, that the shades of the colors can be "corrected" to stop all of the retinal rivalry. Other colors can then be used as replacements, too, to create more exciting colors... again, a long, involved process, and not easily explained, but Spy Kids 3D had way too much retinal rivalry, and the DVD also had another bigger problem, and that's ghosting artifacts from MPEG compression. Sadly, this is not completely solvable with compliant DVD's, so the only real solution for "perfect" anaglyph movies are to use other methods, like on-the-fly conversion to anaglyph or lossless compression (resulting in huge file sizes, but with today's computers, that is no longer a reason not to do it). The anaglyph DVD is simply not an option, once you have experienced a "perfect anaglyph movie". But, there are alternatives :-) P. K. Spy Kids 3D looks amazing on a HDTV plasma screen tv or LCD HDTV . you can adjust the colors buy using the adjustment buttons on these new monitors its just so simple. put the red and blue glasses on and adjust the color on the monitor till the anaglyph 3d looks perfect. its quite simple to get super anaglyph 3d on a plasma or LCD HDTV.i have a Bens Lens and shoot a lot of anaglyph video footage with it. on a HDTV plasma screen the anaglyph 3d footage looks super. |

The relative DVD "failure" of both "Spy Kids 3D" and the more recent "Shrek 3D" point up the craziness of providing 6 cent paper/gel glasses to see 3D at home. There are 50 cent (mass prod) plastic glasses that make the home experience way better.Firstly, the red image is way sharper & has normal contrast. Secondly, the filters are not so radically blue in the right eye. They allow 5% of the red to pass. This gives each eye some red color cues to work with. A horrible effect, RETINAL RIVALRY, results when you cancel all red with the blue filter. The filters should be thin cyan on the right side. Special processing is now available that maximizes good balance of these better glasses. "Space Station 3D" is the next anaglyph DVD coming out this year. Hopefully, the Warners people will think twice about repeating the "Shrek" and "SpyKids" paper glasses fiasco! They can get the good glasses for about 50 cents. If you doubt me, check out the gorgeous images on www.anachrome.com |

Could you explain in details? What that mean- "RETINAL RIVALRY"? I can’t to understand that term. |

Retinal rivalry in brief .. when the left eye and right eye are seeing different conflicting colors.. for example look at a red ball thru your anaglyph ThreeD glasses, from the left eye (with red filter in front) you see a whitish outline only of the ball but via the right eye(cyan filter) you see a dark colored ball.. your retinas are seeing rival colors (or to be precise rival shades of the same color). I think im gonna have to approach Warner with my glasses, they are paper, sturdy and have chromatically correct filters. Price is around 12cents with 4color print job. Cheers Clyde |
