Are there any legal eagles in this forum? I recently read an article stating that the Sharp corporation, which wants to put 2D-3D converter software in it's future 3D laptop computer, was in discussion with major content providers (i.e. DVD movies etc.) to ensure that it did not violate their copyright protections. I imagine that this has something to do with copyright protecting against unauthorized modification of materials. The software in question is similar to other stuff out there that uses 2D cues in an attempt to determine depth information, and then morphs the images slightly to create stereo pairs. It seems a bit of a stretch that this would violate copyright, unless it's some quirk in the Japanese law. On the other hand, I can see how some sticklers for technical perfection like George Lucas would have fits if anyone or anything anything fiddled with their images. Does anyone know anything definitive about this? |
