I have a projector and was wondering if anyone has experimented with projecting onto a dome or other concave surface. I ran across a version of Quake called Fisheye Quake (http://wouter.fov120.com/gfxengine/fisheyequake/) and thought that it would be awesome to match this with a spherical surface. One could invest in an expensive fish-eye lens for the projector or you could use the method of a spherical mirror as seen online here, Dome projection on a budget: (http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/~pbourke/projection/domemirror/) Creating a dome screen would be the difficult part, and I don't even know where to start to find a spherical mirror. Fisheye Quake might not even require a special projection setup other than the dome screen, but you could play other games if you were accurately projecting spherically. From what i understand, fish-eye lenses are quite expensive. You could include head tracking to this scenario and get a pretty realistic environment and near 180 degrees. Another questions that comes to mind is, "would the edges be out of focus since you are projecting a different lengths - could this be possibly solved by real-time focusing tied to head tracking device. -cbrack at myrealbox dot com |

Dont be discouraged by some people on this newsgroup. They have no imagination. I think you should try it. Sounds very interesting. |

Have a look at http://www.elumens.com/. If you are technically oriented, look up their patents. Itsikw |

I've wondered myself about a 'front projection' HMD before. If you could use the LCD from a commercial projector (which is tiny) and remove all the other bits. Using clustered white LEDs as a light source you could (probably) create quite a compact projector to fit into a HMD. The HMD can then be quite large as the 'screen' need have little mass. |

Most LCD projectors are 3 panel LCD systems, which use monochrome LCD panels for each color, red, green and blue. They are then fed colored light, which is bounced off a series of mirrors to align them all and project an image. The whole display LCD panel configuration is usually a cube. I thought about doing this myself but it would be quite complicated and most likely too big. |

I'll add alittle from what I found. To get the image on a curved surface, you also need a device or program to make this happen which is expensive.. As you know you would have to get the projecting image to fit your dome which wont happen without this I guess... Type in Quakecave in a search and it will talk about the dome theater somewheres... IM working on doing a Cave setup for Unreal 2003 TM.. Also check at planetjeff say show a nice mini cave with 3 projectors, the screen shot looks awesome. Soon they will have the Cave setup for Stereo... Ku |

Look at http://www.nec-pj.com/italian/products/others/distorted.html seems to be a cheap solution to have the image on a semi-spherical surface. What do you think? |

I think the fundamental problem when projecting onto a concave surface is that the image would be too dark at the edges where the projection angle is steep. |

Elumens claims that their lens fix this problem, if this is true, I aspect a fish-eye lens to work too. Has anyone tried a anamorphic lens in front of a projector + a cylindrical screen? Giorgio. |

Try making dome out of octagons, like a soccer ball or radome. Might take a long time, use polysterene tiles. Another idea stretch a piece of sheet plastic around a frame, fill with water until it curves then fiberglass resin the underside. Wait till dry, empty water, might end up with a rough dome. |

The Elumens people are working on adding fisheye distortion to CaveUT. It kinda works, but needs a bunch more testing before it's ready to release. Stay tuned to http://planetjeff.net/ut/CaveUT.html for news. |

Just so I understand this correctly. standard game + 1 projector + 1 fisheye lens + 1 hemispherical screen = 150-180 deg. FOV. What is a fisheye lens? is it multi faceted or just hemispherical? The screen would be time consuming but way easy. and 2" hemispherical lens' are about $50. This sounds like a fun project and I need to make a screen for my projector anyway. Damn, that's an NEC firmware upgrade. I hope Infocus comes out with one. Think I go send them a link to the NEC site. :D |

i've got the correct NEC projector, now all i need to do is flash it and then construct the screen. I bought a weather balloon from ebay and will be using it to make a protoype hemispherical screen. Fisheye quake here we come! cbrack at myrealbox dot com |
