I've seen a few posts about people using a stereoscope and dual monitor setup to achieve ghost-less 3d gaming at very high resolutions. before i start seting up a stereoscope gaming system i wanted to see what other's experiences have been with stereoscopes. here's some links/info i've collected about possible setups: 1. Head Mounted Stereoscope: http://www.3dquarium.com/viewer.html Might look goofy but have read that it works. Costs $40. Might need to replace mirrors with larger front-surface mirrors if using larger monitors. 2. Mounted Stereoscope: http://www.crystalcanyons.net/Pages/TechNotes/DualMonitorDigitalViewing.shtm Don't know if the nvidia drivers will be able to do "left side flipping" as well as the dual monitor output. should work with larger monitors. cheap - only need one large flat surface mirror sheet ($30 for two sheets at http://store.allstainedglass.com/fronmirsheet.html). Might give yourself a cuncusion if you ram your head into the mirror while playing 1600x1200 Doom3 on two 21" monitors cbrack at myrealbox dot com |

Yes, I still have my head-mounted stereoscope. When Nvidia dual-monitor mode is working for a particular game, it's AWESOME. No ghosting, vivid color. The biggest issue for me right now is still the drivers. Not every game works in dual-monitor mode, but many do wonderfully. OpenGL games seem to give the most trouble. It is rumored that when the official new drivers appear on Nvidia's website, that they will be stable for virtually all games. I'm really hoping for that. Other than that, you just have to get used to holding your head still when you play games, but I adapted to that pretty quick. My advice to you would be to use two nice 17" flat monitors (CRT or LCD). The two 21" monitors I got free from work are a bit large for this purpose (but hey, they were free). For reference on my setup, see the following post. http://www.stereo3d.com/discus/messages/24/1164.html?#POST10609 Step 3 is outdated now that the newer drivers are better, though. The Brigadier I got from http://www.3dquarium.com/viewer.html has the larger outer mirrors mounted about 4” from the smaller inner mirrors (center-to-center). I exchanged the outer mirrors for 3”x5” first-surface mirrors and the inner mirrors for 2”x3” first-surface mirrors. The outer mirrors are about the right size, but the inner mirrors could actually have been 1.5”x2.5” and been OK. I got my mirrors from http://www.fsmirrors.com . I also added some padding to the nose-bridge to make it more comfy and moved the set-up about a half-inch out on the brim of the hat to accommodate my big noggin. I don’t believe Nvidia is planning on making a “dual monitor with second image flipped” mode anytime soon. That would be awesome though because one big mirror is a much simpler setup than a stereoscope. If you have cash and the space, a dual-projector setup with polarization would be cooler than my setup. But for the money, I’m content until better HMDs or cheaper projectors come out. |
