Need some help from “ATI to Nvidia” survivors! Okay, as reluctant as I am to make the switch considering my ATI 9800Pro is less then an year old (came with my DELL XPS, which I bought top of the line, leading edge tech so I wouldn’t have to upgrade shortly after getting it… but here I am). What is a good Nvidia equivalent to the 9800Pro? I want a card that will still give me excellent performance as well as stereo effects. I realize nvidia don’t quite match up to ATI performance wise (blurry textures for instance) but I’m not looking at upgrading my video card for at least another year or so after this. I’ve heard that the GeForce FX 5900XT is pretty good? Any personnel reviews or thoughts on this card while using stereo3d with it? Okay and last question/comment --- I’ve heard that the latest forceware drivers from Nvidia don’t actually support sterio3D and you have to use older 45.23 drivers… how does this effect newer video cards… what’s the difference in the driver? As usual thanks in advance for any help!!! |

That card is a good one, also the 6800 cards will be out soon, so you might want to consider them. Latest driver is 56.72 and works pretty good and is actually required for latest cards. I'll let others comments specifically. - StereoGamer |

Well Nvidia keeps trying to keep up, and they are getting our business as long as they have the monopoly on stereo3D. So im sure they are doing okay. not sure if I am willing to fork out the money for the new 6800 esp since right now it doesn't support 3D. It's not enough of a upgrade to pay the nearly $500 it's going to cost. As I see it the 5900XT is down to about $190 and should go down a little more once the 6800 comes out, so perhaps I'll wait for that??? |

I don't understand what all the pro ATi fuss is about. Has anyone actualy analysed the benchmarks, or benchmarked a setup themselves? The difference between High end ATi vs High end nVidia is very small. I'm talking about 5fps out of 200. Granted ATi is a little cheaper, i don't see why everyone thinks nVidia cards are far inferior to ATi cards. Here is an example: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-13.html#unreal_tournament_2003 The difference is marginal. Aside from the hardcore gamers, Can anyone even tell a diference between 60fps and 100fps Now, im not pro-ATi or pro-nVidia, but i am pro-intelligent choice. Looking at the results, coupled with the frequent driver upgrades which always upgrade performance and stereo compatibility, the choice really is a no-brainer - nVidia, for the moment being anyway. Calling them a "child" and the likes is just unfounded, and lacks due respect that both companies deserve. Just 5 years back, people would have laughed in your face at the mere suggestion of an accelerator board that makes computer games faster. --RAGEdemon |

> Just 5 years back, people would have laughed in your face at the mere suggestion of an accelerator board that makes computer games faster. Uhmm.... not really, not if they were reasonably aware of the state-of-the-art. http://www.geek.com/gaming/gamerevs/video/monster.htm (from mid-98) But I'll grant you 7 years back. :-) As to your basic point, I'm not "au courrant" enough in the area to know (or care, really). I just want cards that do stereo 3D well, and that part really is a no-brainer. |

BTW is anyone able to tell me if an nVidia 5200 chipset can do 3D-stereo (using the nVidia stereo drivers)? TIA |

Yeah, i was trying to make a point abuout the chances they took - may 3DFX rest in peace. Goodness, 2004 already... still feels like 2001 ;p I believe every(?) nVidia card can support the stereo control pannel, in the FX line anyway. Though , you might want to give a Ti4600 a try, costs around £40 nowadays, and has equivelent performance of FX5600 minus full DX9 support. Stereo severelyegrades game perfoemance to between 50%-75% of original framerate. Unless you are planning on playing REALLY old games, it is not recomended. If you want something cheap, wait few weeks for 6800 and X800 to become available. The lower cards will drop in price to clear stock, you should get somehting uch more powerful at the same price. Although, if you merely want to view still stereo pictures, 5200 would do you quite well --RAGEdemon |

Actually, I don't want to play games or view still images. I want to port our existing proprietary lossless, guaranteed-sync stereo playback app, which runs at 1280x1024 @ 96 fps on 3DLabs Permedia 2 - based cards to something newer, while converting it back to play passive as well as active stereo (which it used to do many years ago). The existing version is written directly to the hardware (i.e. no DXx or OpenGL) and it's getting hard to find Permedia 2 cards. So cost isn't really an object but I want to put it on top of DX9, (as the manufacturers are getting more and more difficult about distributing technical reference manuals) so I need a card, any card, which is supported by the stereo driver. The only reason I asked about the 5200 is I happen to have one on my desk at the moment, so I am trying it as I write this. Thanks for the info though, I will no doubt wind up getting several of those for testing out whatever it is I wind up writing! |

To Rage demon. Why i m now a ATI guys after so many years with Nvidia? It s the picture Quality. The HDTV 720p Shine. more than shine! The Tv out of all Nvidia card i have test is simply no match compare to the Tv out of ATI. For me it s the reason. Not the frame rate, only the picture quality. |
