Okay, I'm not a techie like most in this group, but a couple years ago I bought a Mitsubishi rear-projection HD TV and was sad to discover my FS 3-D DVD's would no longer work on it. I had not upgraded my DVD player at the time, which was not a progressive scan player, so it output an interlaced image. A few weeks ago, I upgrqaded to a progressive scan player and decided to try out the 3-D system and it WORKS! The player and TV are displaying a 480 P (progressive) image and the system works great. When I switch the player over to interlaced, the 3-D effect is ruined but in progressive mode it works. I was wondering if anyone knows why that is? I thought an interlaced image was required for FS video to work but it works great when both the TV and DVD player are in progressive mode. |

It's simple: Whenever field-sequential 3-D video is converted to progressive scan, the biggest X-factor is the * HOW * the interlaced to progressive scan conversion is performed. In your given case, the conversion was performed by your rear projection set, which didn't convert f/s 3-D to progressive properly. However, your progressive scan DVD player appears to do the f/s 3D conversion correctly. And when your set is fed a true progressive scan input, it's internal pro-scan converter is bypassed. There are many ways to convert interlaced video to progressive. 24fps film material with NTSC DVDs are converted best with inverse telecine pro-scan conversion, while true 30fps material works best with simple line doubling. With 60 field sourced video sourced material, there is no "magic bullet" method, so a variety of methods are used. If the video pro-scan conversion uses interpolation for it's video conversion and also doesn't get confused with f/s material and doesn't switch modes, then you are good to go! |

Thanks for the info, GregK. Had I known that, I would have upgraded my DVD player back when I bought the TV! You'd think some of the FS DVD stores, like razor3d.com would maintain a list of progressive scan DVD players that make the conversion properly. I would think as more and more people buy widescreen progressive scan TV's that this will become more of an issue. I'm thrilled to have my 3-D movies back, and on a big screen no less! |
