Hey guys, Z800 headtracking HMD from Emagin is announced soon, but what about the headtracking feature in upcomming games?

- Will you be able to look arround while driving?-

- Can you look down to your gun while shooting or

- look backwards while running forworth?

- What you think about lightguns and upcomming stuff?

..I am really interested what you think about!

Most games will probably just use mouse emulation. The truth is that game designers are more concerned with graphics than with performance. They cut out alot of stuff just to reach the release date. So, unless there is a high demand it is unlikely we will see that cool features that you mentioned. But, the source code for some of the older games has been released, so someone with programming skills will be able to add those features.

A baseless joystick would be better than a lightgun, since lightguns only work with tv screens.

I am working on a full body tracking device and I can't say much more. I'm not making any promises when it will be released (maybe never).

Mouselook is implemented in most FPS games. In so much as movement is keyboard driven and is separate from where you look controlled by the mouse.

So you can look around when 'running' already.

Various wireless controllers are available to do what you are thinking.

I would suggest when this becomes available mapping movement to keyboard and enabling mouselook.

"So you can look around when 'running' already.."--

@Anonymus

That'S right, but this is NOT what I was talking about! For example you can't LOOK DOWN (and see your gun), while shooting forwoth.. and you can't look around while driving in a racing game! That's because in current games the 'view' and 'aim' is both controllend by the mouse and not independend controled by the head movement & mouse (or infrared? tracked pistol.. that's what I've meant)

For a gameprogrammer it should be much easy to unparent the head movement from weapon-aiming, so
the view is controllend by a wireless control..

vr_gamer, I know what you're talking about, but it's really up to the game designers to add this in! What you want is the ability to aim your head/torso and your waist/legs/vehicle independently.

Search these forums and elsewhere because I did hear about one racing game that had a free-look button you could hold down on the keyboard to allow you to look around your car using the mouse. I've also played a battle-mech type game a long time ago that allowed independent movement of the torso from the waist/legs so you could run one way and shoot in another. And, oh, as for looking backwards, a few games like GTA Vice City have a button just for that.

But I'm sad to say that very few games have this option. Most games expect you just become adept at using the forward, backpedal, and side-step movement keys so you can "run" in one direction and "gun" in another.

It's a mappable control, take a look through your control mapping in the options screens. I have it mapped to my middle mouse button.

How the hell would you be able to aim without the crosshair in the middle of the screen in a FPS?

You can do that with the vehicles in Half-Life 2.
