Hello everyone! I have a friend who is in the plastic business and can manufacture or order all kinds of plastic materials (in sheet form mostly). He's offered me to have a go a building a rear-projection screen just for fun. Problem is just... I have no idea where to start. :-D He has lots of plastic sheets already laying around in his warehouse. What should I look for? Any special thickness or kind of plastic that's extra suitable? Anyone who has any experience with this? Thanks!!! |

Yeah little, at least when it comes to building a cheap one. I went to Ikea and bought a shower curtain for 5 dollars, man it worked really good I was surprised how well it worked. They had one which was little more expencive. The material was stronger but it seemed to let more light through. But now I'm consider buying that because this first one is little more fragile. It's also a little hard to stretch so I can get all the wrinkles away. Anyway, if you can try different materials go ahead. I wouldn't recommend a material that is too transparant, you might see the lamp. Regards |

M.H No I don't think so either :-) But why would one need that unless we were talking about a passive setup(3d), right? |

M.H. I search for a material for passive rear proejction (flexible, not hard desk) ... The only one I had ever seen is Stewart in $X000 So I just asked :-). Btw. standard projection material for rear rpeojction are not very expensive and they probably give better contrasts and les hot-spots than some non-special one. |

The shower curtain liner seems to work well. http://3dfightsim.com/screen/final2.jpg The dazian rear-screen material looks interesting. I'm thinking of purchasing a few yards. http://www.dazian.com/html/projection_screens.html |

Another very inexpensive rear projection material is Lycra fabric. It's not very efficient, but has a wide angle of view and is highly elastic, which makes it easy to fabricate a taut screen on a wooden frame using a staple gun. I've used Lycra quite a bit as rear projected theater scrims. You'll be limited by the fabric width to about 7-8 ft in the smaller dimension, but the rolls are fairly endless. Cost will be $5-$10 per running yard. Needless to say, Lycra won't work in situations requiring a non-depolarizing screen, but works fine with shutter glasses. |

Thanks for all the answers guys! Real nice of you! That shower curtain sounds interesting. I've realized that maybe it would be good to have a rollable screen that I can take with me and then the shower curtain is both rollable and cheap! Can't get this link to work though: http://3dfightsim.com/screen/final2.jpg Does it show a shower curtain "in action" or what? Thanks again. |
