What is the difference between the Sony Glasstron A-35 and A-55? Any comments/suggestions about them would be awesome. I'm not clear on them but do they come with a battery that can make them truly portable? If not what would I need and where would I get them? Thanks so much! | ||

Both have the same resolution (180K pixels) and similar field of view. The A55 is slightly older and has the "across the forehead" form factor, where the optical unit swivels down over the eyes. The newer A35 has an "eyeglasses" styling, where more of the weight rests on your nose. However, as a result, the A35 is much lighter -- and apparently provides a slightly brighter image than its predecessor. Both models can be driven by a camcorder battery (not included) or by an AC adapter. Note that neither have computer-style (VGA) video inputs, nor do their rather low resolutions make them appropriate for such... nor are they stereoscopic. So viewing DVDs from a portable player is the main intent. Yet if you're gonna spend the money for that, you might want to consider Olympus' new HMD with a wider, 16x9 resolution -- perfect for letter box DVDs. I saw one in the Sharper Image catalog, but I'm sure you could find it on the net for much cheaper. | ||

Are you sure it isnt the other way around? Isn't the a55 the newer model with more features?? Olmpus on paper looks good but not all that much better if at all than the a55 or canon. | ||

I know the non-ascending numbers make it look otherwise, but the A35 is indeed the newer model. Sony Electronics' web site only features the A35 now... testimony to the A55 having been discontinued. As far as Olympus vs. Sony vs. Canon, that's all such a subjective call. My advice is that you find a way to try them. I tried the A55/LDI-50 last year, the A35 at one of those "cutting edge" electronics stores in the mall several months ago, and the Olympus FMD-150W (the 240K pixel, 16x9 model) at the Sharper Image store recently. I didn't buy any of them, but it allowed me to form my own opinions about them -- which would probably differ from anyone else's -- and mean more than what's "on paper." The Canon HMD, which I haven't tried, is apparently higher rez than the 180K pixel models, at 200x450 full-color pixels (or 270K "raw" pixels, 50% more than 180K)... so it has an accordingly higher price (in yen), or at least it did, last I checked. I don't know where you're at, but the Canon HMD will be hard to find in the U.S., as it's not marketed here at all (and even if you order it, say, from Japan Direct, you'll get the Japanese version so you'll hafta be able to read kanji/katakana/hiragana :-). | ||

Further evidence... This just on Slashdot, refering to a story in the LA Times about organic LEDs (OLEDs) and how they'll be used in headsets. Incredible stuff! |
