Basically, when considering all the great advancements in technology and resources available, the current offering of virtual reality hardware stinks in my own opinion. Moving from 2d screens to 3d is, of course, the next logical focal point. How this tech is developed and 'brought to the masses' seems to be the hang up. I'm not even going to get into other immersion such as vr gloves and body suits. Shutter glasses are cool but you always have to be looking at the screen. Plus there is ghosting and the 3d experience can vary depending on your refresh rate and any other number of things. With head mounted displays you can incorperate sound and head tracking which is cool, but resolution sucks and some don't even incorperate stereo vision. What's the point? I have a feeling something cool is going to happen soon that will help commercialize 3d. Or at least I REALLY want something to happen. It's current offerings are unacceptable. |

Something will happen. Never before has there been so much work going on in the core technologies behind the scenes. This article, about the Society for Information Display conference last week, is a simple, recent example. Think Sony's out of the game, having dropped their higher-end HMDs late last year? WRONG! It's just a matter of (less and less) time before you see that "something" happen. The pieces are falling into place (and not just with the HMD, but other necessary hardware too). |

Whoops! I just intended for a post to be here, but it ended up in the "Glasstron" thread. So if you read my most recent post over there, imagine that it's right here. That's what I get for having multiple windows open at once. :-) |

Wow, i just read the story. I hope they will be priced resonably, but man, that's exciting stuff! I can't wait. I know there are other display techs that look real promising too, but I haven't seen any thing like this, only 8 one thousanths thick???!!! and no back lighting! You know, I was in the other discussion and came this close || to posting this over there too...hehe |

Hi All, Thought I would throw my 2 cents in on the Subject. The OLED stuff is exciting and will really make things easier for companies like us as well. At this time they are probably 2 years away from having a product that we could use in an HMD. The Headsets they talk about are for Mobile computers, it is a monocular system. Right now, because of some specific limitations in the displays, we could not use them in our HMD's. Secondly, no one has made any in a significant quantity yet. This will happen in the next year or so. When it does happen, you can bet we will jump on the OLED bandwagon. Steve |

Is the OLED stuff the answer we've been looking for? I know that IBM and Motorola have new display techs in the works as well. But do you think I could find any info on them now? HELL NO!! Anyways, I'm curious which one will be the 'break through'. I'm with Anon, build it and we will come (price permitting)... |
