Will there ever be updated Wicked drivers with Pageflipping or even Interlacing or is there a principal problem that ties them to Syncdoubling only?

Doesn't look like they will ever change..
Apparently page-flipping involves too much dependance on the different chipsets/drivers, while interlace is inferior w.r.t. flicker (and a sync-doubler is easier to build than a line-blanker - been there, done that, no T-shirt ;-(

Usually page-flipping has to be embedded into the graphics driver itself, like ELSA and ASUS did.

Wicked3D is a wrapper which sits on top of the graphics driver. It's much easier not to mess with the internal functions of the VGA-chip from there.

VR Standard did this for the VR-Joy drivers. They do page-flipping and as far as I know it's a wrapper, not a driver.

I think it's time for Metabyte to do the next step. Page-flipping rules.

VR-Joy solution based on Winx3D library is realy very interesting. I was just testing this drivers
with such monstrosity as 3D Labs Oxygen GVX1 profesional graphic card (two ventilators, texture and geometry cooprocesor :) ) and it worked (for 3DMark 2000). The Winx3D library gives the universality to this drivers ...

I visited the VRStandard booth at CeBit this year. We talked about the driver/wrapper development. Unfortunately the chipsets by NVidia and 3dfx are those which cause them the most troubles. These chipsets are the most important on the market.

I don't know the latest status of the wrappers. Have to check.

On the VR-Joy page they claim to be able to use VRcaddy on the older Voodoo and NVDIA chipsets with the support for the newer ones to come. Is this a page flipping alternative to the Wicked 3D drivers? Are these drivers free to download? How good are they? Comparable to ELSA and ASUS?

  • The driver is not available for download (but they might accept volunteers for beta testing)
  • For NVidia, the last official version will not work with anything newer than 3.xx drivers
  • The stereo quality in page-flipping is good
  • On-line stereo-configuration is a mess (no indicator, Ctrl-[ hotkeys impossible to reach for European keyboards)
  • Did I mention already that they support legacy glasses through the WinX3D drivers (as long as those don't need line codes) ?
They are working on a new version with improved features and compatibility, but apparently they will have to sacrifice some page-flip resolution for hardware-driver independence. Haven't heard from them for a while now, though, so that might have changed...

I wrote to Wicked3D and told them that they need to hurry up and make a page-flipping wrapper. This is what they sent me:

"You'll notice that "all other 3D shutter glasses" which support page flipping write specific drivers for specific video card chipsets. We write a (hopefully) universal driver which supports any chipset we enable. Our former VP of Engineering and our former Chief Engineer both came to the conclusion that a universal page-flipping mode was impossible--it would have to be implemented directly in the video card drivers. That being said, one of our engineers recently figured out how to do it in our wrapper ;^>. He's only tested it on a couple of chipsets so far, but it looks really nice. It will probably be incorporated in the new driver re-write, which we're hoping to have ready around January."

Sounds good to me. Hopefully they pull it off.

This sounds great! Maybe real page flipping will finally see the light for the new Voodoo cards!
