WOW was I suprised.
Here is a run down on the results.

1. Regular gameplay
Excellent. If there was any ghosting from fast motion I didnt c it.

2. page flipping
UGHHH, i never thought such ghosting was possible.
I guess this is no suprise

3. Interlaced
I tried this one as a joke but it suprised me.
I didnt think it would work since the transistor to pixel ratio was not 1:1 or even 2:1, I played it at 800x600 when the monitor has 1600x1024 pixels.

Anyway, it kinda works!!
I saw very very thin lines going across, easily forgivable, bu as for ghosting, just a little.
Its actually playable!! KINDA, i didnt go through
heavy action but just standing in a single spot was good enuff for me.

i have been playing around more,
and during interlaced sessions,
strong ghosting artifacts occur with white objects, no suprise I guess.

But with other colors, all was ok!!

I guess this makes sense since the black to white to black time is 40 ms.

The planar LCDs have a pixel response of 10ms.
Perhaps someone would like to try this experiment on those LCDs?

They are pretty cheap.
17.4 inches for 799 at dell of all places, they are running a 10 percent off deal.
Or at least buy it and return it in 30 days n get ur money back.

These LCDs have good specs n planar makes LCDs for the medical community, thats what I heard neway.

good luck :)

I own an SGI 1600SW connected to a SGI 320NT.
I've never tested it with shutterglasses.
Of course it cannot work, it's an LCD monitor and the refresh rate isn't sufficient.
What's your experience?

It does work,
The refresh rate is fine, low but fine.
60Hz is ok.

Its not ideal but it will work.

I get huge ghosting problems with page flipping.
n the dithering down of the horizontal lines by the lcd actually help image quality.
Interlacing on the 1600sw actually looks better then on a regular monitor!!

But with interlacing and with the 1600sw's fast pixel response, there was still ghosting.
That is why I asked someone to try the experiment with the planar lcds as they have an even faster pixel response, 4x faster. I may return my lcd since it costs to much.
Dunno, I am not sure if it is worth it.

later

How have you connected the shutterglasses' pass-trought VGA box?
The 1600SW flat panel connects directly via a digital cable on my SGI320.

yes I have.

I dont think that is the problem.
The image has ghosting just because the pixel response is not fast enough. :(
Its ok though.
But in general, I am not sure how much I really like the flat panel.

For general purposes, it kind of bothers me.
The vertical viewing angle is kind of low if u ask me. I am still not totally convinced that it is all that superior to a CRT.
PROS
Sharpness is high,
color quality is perfect,
easier on the eyes,
nice soft image

CONS
viewing angles are poor,
refresh rate is low, <- dont let ne1 fool u its important because of the updates to the screen even in 2D IMHO
