I am interest in building a wide FOV HMD and have found an interesting site for my displays (http://www.microvue.com), but am interested to know what the pitfalls are with the wide FOV.

It seems a lot of the HMDs out there are around 30 degrees, why is this? Are the optics expensive?

Does anyone know a good source of optics or have any plans for a wide FOV optical arrangement?

Thanks

Ray

Reason:
1) The optic is expensive
2) The optic is havy and hard to mount in the
HMD
3) It require hi-res screen as image source ...

You will find profesional HMD with hi
FOV in price range about X0 000 $ ...

Can you elaborate? What are we talking about here, custom-made prims?

Ray,

I too am building a garage HMD. My design is different from any I've seen. I just started putting together a web page to document the project: http://homepages.about.com/johncraigrochester/vrvision/
I have done some preliminary work on the optics. Optics is the area I have the least knowledge. I'm shooting for 60 deg FOV. I have found some eyepieces for telescopes that have up to 80 deg FOV: http://www201.pair.com/resource/astro.html/regular/products/tele-vue-optics/pg9.htm

The Wide FOV eyepieces alone are around $300US each.

I've ordered sets from a military surplus store. 60 deg FOV a "5 Element Modified Plossl" design. About $20 each. http://www.surplusshed.com/list.cfm?Category=Eyepieces%2FSets

I have some good reference books on the subject. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to decipher the optics science they use to describe performance. Some of the challenges of wide FOV optics are peripheral distortion, color blurring, and IPD {clearance from eye to lens).

Regarding why most HMD's max out around 30 deg FOV, IMO any greater FOV and an already poor resolution would be reduced proportional to the increase in FOV. There are some studies that suggest increased FOV exacerbates simulator sickness problems.

Good Luck w/ your project. If you find a good lens system, I'd love to hear about it.

Later,

I think that you will get more bang for your buck out of an enclosed cockpit using a large monitor with shutter glasses, good audio, and g force simulation via a direct tilt connection to thrust controls. That is to simulate gs tilt the cockpit backwards when the throttle is pushed forward. It will work as long as the cockpit is completely enclosed. It may be possible do it using a simple mechanical mechanism.

I am new to this message board. but I just wanted to say that I have been working on a project with the vfx1. my project involves using NO ISA board. I have been working on a Project that will allow users to fully immerse themselves into any shoot em up games with this body suit connected with the vfx1. and all body movements will be derived into your games. as far as tracking is concerned I have developed a new way to track movements using various Techniques. I am happy to say that the ISA card will no longer be needed instead it will be using an interface box I have created for this project. You have to see this shit I am working on it is really awesome! I will not give out any technical information because it is my own creation and none of my work is protected as of yet and also I should be finished in a couple of months so those really interested I will be selling. Imagine yourself running in your own livingroom and jumping and being able to interact that into whatever game you are playing. using a real full size machinegun in your hands and being able to point and shoot your enemy. you duck for real your ducking in the game for real you run for real your running in the game for real you jump for real your Jumping in your game for real, you get the picture....any questions email me at jtridexter@hotmail.com
