I have an official Forte (now IIS) built VFX1 LINKBOX. It is a one of a kind item (it is their prototype that never went into full production) - but I have it. You can see a picture here: http://www.geocities.com/vr_junkie/LinkBox.jpg The linkboxes that use to be available - were not quite as nice and sold for 300+ dollars when they were even available. Bryan Klein (who used to be the top tech at Forte) built these in his basement to supplement his income. If you want this rare one of a kind gem - it's yours for 199.00 (US stateside shipping included). Payment requested via PayPal. In case you are a long time reader here, I am VRJUNKIE - I have posted a lot of stuff on the VFX1 over the years - including the optics improvement for the original VFX1. Additional info: ================ This linkbox is fully functional and in great condition. It allows you to use your VFX1 with any video card - and removes the 256 color constraint. It will also allow some higher resolutions to translate and display - though it really doesn't matter much unless the game doesn't allow setting the display to lower resolutions (like 640x480) as the ultimate resolution you can truly take advantage of is limited by the LCD displays in the HMD itself. It is nice though to have this compatibility of higher resolutions for the games that no longer allow lower res settings! I'm not sure what all resolutions will work - but I remember getting 800x600 to work. It also has all cords needed to connect your VFX1 - so when you connect your existing cable up in line - you will have a longer cord and it will facilitate play standing up! I am also including a special bonus: I also have a 2nd custom adapter/breakout box that enables one to use the linkbox even if you don't use your VIP card - it enables your HMD to be powered and handles getting sound to and from it. The original linkbox was never meant to eliminate the VIP (but this box allows it) - it's purpose was just to get greater color depth and to gain compatibility with all video cards. It was designed when the graphic accelerators were just starting to come out and they didn't even have VESA feature connectors. VFX1 owners panicked - and the linkbox was born! If you want to use your VFX1 without the VIP, you do have to do a simple modification to your VFX1, the instructions can be found here: http://www.geocities.com/vr_junkie/VFX1Mod.htm This combination will really breath some new life into a VFX1 - you will have a really versatile setup! Why am I selling it? - I've primarily been using the VFX1 without this linkbox for some time now. I have put together 2 vintage machines (hooked together) with 2 VFX1s (complete with intercom) for quake (and a few other classic titles) and both my video cards now support the VFX1. Actually I'm using a combination of 3 video cards in each machine (a single Voodoo Rush along with two 12 megabyte Vodoo2s running in SLI mode). While neither simple or exactly elegant - it does work well. Since I've went with such dated equipment and video cards - and am willing to put up with only 256 colors (when using the VFX1) I no longer need the linkbox - although it took me years to get hold of one! These LINKBOXES are all long gone - and this setup is a one of a kind opportunity! I can be contacted at: vr_junkieATyahooDOTcom Lane |

I actually have a vfx1, basically brand new in the box with all software manuals hardware etc. Any idea what these things are worth anymore? I have the vfx1. I had always planned to build this conversion box from the plans but I just don't have enough free time. I'd be interested in trading this unit perhaps or selling it. I've seen on listed again and again on ebay for $475 that never sells. I would sell mine for less than this amount. So has anyone made a conversion box and have recommendations? As I might make time to do this conversion. Feel free to contact me regarding this unit. |
