I remember some year ago Elsa gave away a 3dsmax plug-in bounded to their high-end graphic board to get a stereo preview in a prospective window of 3dsmax.
It worked only with shutterglasses.
I think a stereo anaglyph interactive plug-in for 3dsmax would be worth some money (there are a lot of 3dstudiomax user out there).

the regular elsa drivers allowed stereo in window with any card in any opengl application

i used it with opengl vrml browsers on Erazor III ( TNT2 card )
