Asus have released a new driver ver 31.42, that they claim will solve a lot of problems. However, this driver IS STILL ver 31.40! All the DLLs are ver 3140 and even the ASUS info utility reports the current version as 3140! C'mon ASUS what's up with that? For anyone interested, the link that they supplied me is : ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/vga/Liveupdate/Win2k/Win2KXP_3142.exe The good news is that the ASUS channel manager here in RSA has agreed to try and get their techies to release a small app. that will enable the shutters on the glasses when using the Nvidia reference drivers. Just have to wait and see. I'll keep you all informed as they update me. | ||

Thanks for the info. The application enabling the glasses with the nVidia driver would be so good to have. I'll check out the ASUS driver update tonight. Will let you know how it went. Serge. | ||

The ASUS glasses are activated in the nVidia driver by going to the registry and change StereoViewerType to 2. If they come up with a 'small app' I bet it does nothing else than this. Only problem is that the ASUS mode of the nVidia driver seems to be buggy under many configurations, but it's worth a try. Check http://stereo3d.com/news/news0062.html Christoph | ||

First off: setting StereoViewerType to 2 does nothing on the newer (v84xx) cards. This is the misconception that costed me several days of my time. ASUS changed the design of their boards so that the glasses deactivate when they are not used which prevents other drivers from using them. This can be worked around though (see my other post about V8420 deluxe card). I'd like to report the results of me trying the driver update. They did improve it but it's still not good enough. Now the driver works (in the sense that stereo 3d does turn on) on Max Payne, BF1942 and Mafia. Max Payne works fine which is great, however the other 2 games still have issues. BF1942 crashes as soon as the stereo mode is switched on. I tried about 10 different ways of turning the streo on (varyibg the moment when it's turned on) and all of them led to the same result: the computer hangs and I have to reset it. Mafia works O.K. however 3d is much worse that with nVidia driver and I cannot adjust it since the control panel (specific for ASUS driver) does not show up. So, the overall conclusion is that you are still better off using nVidia driver with the trick that I described in my other post. If ASUS releases that application which would turn on the glasses, it would be the best thing. Serge. | ||

I'm at pretty much the same place as you Serge. The v84xx cards definitely need the Asus driver to start the shutters flipping on the glasses. Never managed to get that trick of yours working though. With both drivers installed, my machine freezes whenever it enters stereo mode. Hopefully Asus follow through on this one. I have heard nothing more since friday, but will keep on chasing them. It's good to know that I'm not the only one. Thanks for pushing ASUS in the right direction, Fiba. As for using ASUS and nVidia drivers simultaneously, I actually "refined" the technique lately to the point where I'm almost O.K. with it. The key is to avoid turning on both drivers. You start with deactivating nVidia driver, then activate the glasses with say ASUS stereo viewer after which you deactivate the ASUS driver. The good thing is that even with the driver turned off the glasses continue to shutter. At this point you activate the nVidia driver and it's working. The only minor problem is that the glasses loose the sync. once in a while. When this happens (and that's what I didn't recognize before) the stereo becomes reversed which looks bad. All you need to do is to restart the stereo with a hot key (maybe several times until the glasses catch the sync. again). It doesn't happen too often though. I have P4 on ASUS P4S533 mobo running Win98, I guess this may not work with other setups. Serge. | ||

O.K. I admit it. It seems that on the newer ASUS models not even StereoViewerType=2 works, not even if the flipping works correctly. I don't know what they did to the controller this time. This is just another case in a long history of companies who try to make their glasses as incompatible as possible. Let's see if some upcoming nVidia drivers will fix this. Christoph | ||

Ok here's the latest correspondence from Asus tech dept. to my contact here in SA. ------------------------------------------------- Sorry so lately to reply your mail. For driver version issue, I have check with VGA RD engineer and we don't have 31.42 version only 31.40 version. So, this file may be our RD engineer mistake for wrong driver name on it. After I have try to reproduce this issue from my side. I have tested our A7V133-C (Same VIA chipset as your customer's motherboard) with our V8420 Deluxe card. I have found some problem when I play WarcraftIII game under enable Direct3d mode. But, the system will not reboot automatically as your customer's mentioned. I have inform our VGA RD engineer to look into this issue. Any update information for this issue, I will inform you ASAP. Sorry for any your inconvenience. ------------------------------------------------- Make what you will of this coz I'm not too sure how encouraged I should be.??!!?
