Hey all!

My name is Francis. This is the first time I write in this forum. My problem is about the output values returned with InterTrax2 trackers.

I have been working with serveral trackers and the last 2 are InterTrax2. One of them is 1 year older than the other, but the trouble is the same. It looks like that this tracker is based on Earth magnetic field for yaw, so, it is specially affect by magnetic fields, returning erratic values in the 3 axis. Even if I hold the tracker perfectly still, the values (especially yaw) goes rotating from 0 to max without stop. I have been talking with Intersense and they say the only way to repair the tracker is making an adjustment, by them, perhaps with a especial software. It is an easy operation, but only they can do that work. I have to deliver from Europe to USA every time the tracker doesn´t work. As you can see, this is not a good solution, besides the deliver costs (higher than repair) the tracker will return erratic values again in an impredecible time. The amazing thing is that there is 1 year between the 2 trackers and both have the same problem, even the last one from the begining...
I have been also working with a VFX3D HMD and although this built-in tracker is less precise, is more reliable...
Does anyone knows this problem?
Intersense also have another tracker, they say is more reliable, interCube, but its price is prohibitive for me...
Doesn´t it seems incredible that a 100$ tracker have this kind of trouble, and the maker doesn´t give a precise solution?
What are, and where can I search for another trackers´ makers that sells trackers with a price less or equal to 100$, but more realiable?

Thanks FYI.

-Francis V.

I took apart my InterTrax2 once (just 2 tiny unsealed philips screws... voiding the warranty might not be detectable); the innards are interesting, but relatively simple. There are no little potentiometers in there, which makes me wonder what InterSense is adjusting when you send it in.

I have occasional drift from mine (maybe every hour or two it drifts a few degrees per second for several seconds, then stops), but I've never seen anything as drastic as what you're describing. Are you near any magnetic fields? Do you operate or store it near a speaker or unshielded monitor? Are there any big metallic items nearby, or any big power lines or whatnot?

Do you mean $1000 tracker instead of $100 tracker? I only wish the InterTrax2 was $100! I also wish I was familiar enough with other (modern) trackers to help. (Other than InterTrax2 I've only used InterTrax 30 and prior to that, Forte/Virtual i-O/VictorMaxx trackers... some of those were reliable, as you say, but jittery.) Good luck!

I have the P5 glove from essential Reality and its tracking data is very noisy also, but they give an example of a filter in software that works very well. If wanted, I'll cut it and send it. It's C++.

Ops!, sorry for the mistake, yes is about $1000 :-P.
Tj, have you seen that inside the tracker there is a slot to connect a 5 o 6 wire cable ? I think this is for InterSense to adjust it. Also, in my 1st tracker, in windows/game devices it appears with 6 extra buttoms, and Windows detects it automaticaly (usb version), and I think that this is for Intersense to calibrate it. I also know Intersense have a special software for it. For the 2nd tracker Intersense provide a especial software (server) that serves output data to directX software, and now, the tracker has a special driver in "game devices". Now, windows doesn´t detect it, and if so, the new software delete the device and add the new with the new software. They use this new aproach to gain reliability, but I have the same problem.

They use magnetic sensors ICs from honeyWell, and also use a micro to calculate the correct output values. This ICs seem to be magnetic field sensitive and I have a cellular antenna turret nearby, but I´ve tried in other places and I get the same results.

Sdy, thanks for your offer, I´ve tried also to make an algorithm to correct values but it is useless for this kind of problem, because the tracker mistake the axis and it deliver output data from, for example, picht when I´m moving the roll axis and so on...
BTW, Sdy, how does P5 work? I was thinking of buying it, but I don´t know if it is good enough..is it a real 6 DOF? does this work reliable?

Hi Francis,

When I opened the InterTrax2 I *did* remember seeing another connector on the tiny circuit board. At the time, I assumed it was for the serial interface; that perhaps InterSense used the same board for both USB and RS-232 models, but just alternated the cables. I don't know, though. If instead, that's an interface that InterSense uses to debug/tweak it, it's an interesting concept. Wish I knew the pinout and protocol!

I'll re-examine the differences in the driver user interface... Best of luck to you!

P5 glove is not bad at all for $100. Even with the filter, a bit noisy though. I'm not a gamer, but programming VR stuff. With the glasses, i have objects floating in front of the monitor. With the glove , I can grab an object and move it. Pretty cool, but I need to work on changing the glove coordinates to my world's coordinates. The P5 does 6DOF.
