I have the revelator glasses working with WINx3D and my Voodoo 5 card - however, when I am in the control panel and I pick a resolution and a scan rate - it always seems to scan at 60hz or something similar. When I crank it up and push test, it thinks it's at a higher scanrate, but it's exactly the same as when it was at the lowest setting. Lots and lots of flicker. Not much ghosting though, so at least it's accurate. (we're talking directx page-flip mode full screen test here) I know the revelator glasses and the video card can do much better...what am I missing? Is there a driver problem? |

There are some configurations in which WINx3D is not able to change the refresh rate. WINx3D uses features in Windows to change the refresh rate. So the first concern is that the Monitor must be identified in the Windows Display properties - Start / Settings / Control Panel / Display / Settings / Advanced / Monitor. The next concern is whether the display driver writer supports the Windows refresh rate controls - I am sure that 3Dfx does. Finally, if WINx3D is still not able to set the refresh rate, you can do it the old-fashioned way. Set the refresh rate for each resolution in the Windows Display properties, and then select the Desktop resolution in WINx3D. |

Well, I'm using the generic 1024X768 @ 75hz driver for the monitor....I tried using the vanilla (non 75mhz) version and it didn't help any at all. My actual monitor is not listed with the windows drivers, it is an obscure knockoff with a sony trinitron tube. It also will not allow me to set the refresh rate for the desktop resolutions. There is no more tab in the display panel allowing this. I am assuming it's the drivers for the voodoo which control whether or not you have a scan rate selector in the display properties. So, after some further figeting, I am still stuck. |

Huh? I thought voodoos didn't support page-flipping. I must be wrong. |

WINx3D can do page flipping on just about any video chipset - not just with hardware page flipping - but with software page flipping. This includes page-flipping on the VooDoo's as well. |

I thought too that Voodoo can not wotk woth page-flipping, and when I tried to install the revelator drivers, it didn't work because of my voodoo. If you said it works, so please guide me how to install it. Thank you |

Well, it requires a WINx3D-enabled application to get software page-flipping on the VooDoo. Check the apps at www.win3d.com for examples. However, VRCaddyMe is presently an exception - PF is not available on the VooDoos. This is due to some constraints that 3Dfx put into the VooDoo drivers that do not meet VRCaddyMe's requirements. |

what you are using isn't page flipping it's line blanking. Page flipping is done at the video card hardware level and Voodoo doesn't have that hardware. goto 3dfx, download the latest drivers. get the overclocking update too. set your adapter to standard vga. remove 3dfx software from add/remove programs. run the new 3dfx.exe file. it will unzip to windows/temp. go there and run the setup.exe. your adapter tap will now have refresh choices. go to sony.com get drivers for the 420gs 19" monitor or 400 17" monitor. install them. now you will have more refresh choices. run the 3dfx overclock .exe that you just down loaded got to your display settings advanced window goto overclock tab crank it up about 15%. restart machine and rock and roll. |

Actually, VooDoo's all the way back to the Banshees do have the hardware capability for hardware page flipping. But, the WINx3D stereoscopic library presently does not use this feature. Instead, it does software page-flipping on the VooDoos and most other video chipsets - not line blanking. WINx3D monitors the video card and changes the start address on every VSync - thus software page flipping. To see this, download the eval version of 3D Pix from www.win3d.com. But, even though some apps use WINx3D - VRCaddyMe in particular - they do not use the page-flipping features of WINx3D on the VooDoo. VRCaddyMe presently provides stereo using its own line-blanking technique for the VooDoo. As a reference about the hardware-flipping features of the VooDoo', look for the Banshee product from Quantum 3D (now gone). They even had the stereoscopic jack on the video card. But, they had no hardware support. Now, no VooDoo video card has (or probably ever will) a stereoscopic jack. |

From the research that I did when deciding on which stereoscopic system to purchase, I found that any system that did not support sync-Doubling would not work with my Voodoo card. The reason being that Voodoo does not support hardware page flipping. It does support line blanking which I think I've also seen referred to as software page flipping. The Quantum Banshee was a Quantum card using a voodoo graphics engine and may have had the page flipping hardware added. Whereas the Voodoo5 is a product of the late, great 3Dfx company that doesn't support hardware page flipping. This can be confirmed here at this site as well as several of the web ring sites listed within this site. |

I have read the register-level documenation of the Banshee and later VooDoo chips. Believe me - they all have hardware flipping support built in. No special page-flipping hardware needs to be added. When "page-flipping" is referred to, it always means that a complete image for one eye is presented, followed by a complete image for the other eye. This is accomplished by a video card that holds at least two images. Almost always, the hardware has two start addresses - one for where the left eye image is in the video card's memory, and one for where the right eye image is in the video card's memory. With hardware page-flipping, the video card automatically changes the start address at VSync, so that the display alternates between a full left and right image. With "software page-flipping", only a single start address is used on the video card. All video cards have at least one start address. The software watches for when VSync occurs, and forces a new value into the start address. The net result is that a complete left and right image are alternately presented to the display. But, it is because of special software - such as WINx3D - and not because of the hardware. If interlacing has been used as a description of "page-flipping", then it is wrong. With interlacing, both eye's images are embedded into a single image. It is true that the left eye is shown followed by the right eye, so it seems to be page-flipping. But, it is not a page that is flipping - the start address is not changing between images. As for the gaming tools, Metabyte's product uses over/under - also known as sync doubling. VR Standard's VRCaddyMe presently uses interlaced for the VooDoo's. The original VRCaddyMe really did use page-flipping - software page-flipping - on the VooDoos. Research is being done to add software page-flipping back into the design of VRCaddyMe. |
