Yesterday I received my Edimensional glasses in the mail. It's been tough trying to get them to work correctly. I spent all night last night trying all kinds of stuff.

Details follow, but in summary I am not sure whether I should be controlling the stereo effect with the nVidia driver hotkeys (ie Ctrl-T) or the E-Dim Activator hotkeys (ie Ctrl-F10). I started with just the nVidia ones, but I had some problems and the EDim website recommended their Activator program for resynching. Now things are much worse, and it seems like the two are conflicting with each other.

So I need some advice -- should I have this E-D Activator thing installed at all? Should it be in Page Flip or Interlaced mode? Why does it seem to conflict with the nVidia driver and what should I do about it?

In the absence of other advice, I intend to run the nVidia cleaner and just reinstall drivers from scratch and start all over, trying to avoid this Activator thing.

Here are the Details of my hardware and what I did:

I have an nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 and I run WinXP.

I already had the nVidia forceware 61.77 and the 3dstereo program of the same version. I tested these in anaglyph mode and things worked so-so.

After installing my E-D hardware, I switched over to shutterglass mode in the nVidia control panel (from display props), and the medical test image and the test app worked fine.

I was psyched. Then I ran my game (Tribes 2), and became unpsyched. It didn't work right. The screen seemed to be drawing both images fine, but the glasses only flashed *WAY* too slow -- I'd guess about 3-5 times a second.

Since I saw the screen flickering very quickly, and the glasses worked okay before, it seemed like a configuration issue, and not that the hardware wasn't able to perform fast enough.

I followed the advice on the edmin support site:
http://www.edimensional.com/kbase.php?lang=en&artid=5
and installed the E-D Activator and tried the Page Flip / Resynch procedure.

That's when it all went to hell. You wouldn't believe some of the complete graphics meltdowns I have had...

In terms of functional stereo viewing, even the medical test image and nVidia test app stopped working right.

Currently, the only way for me to get stereo to work at all is if I Ctrl-T which tells the nVidia driver to kick in, which sets the screen to drawing the two images. Then the glasses don't synch up right - they either pulse really slow, or they jerk in and out of 3D rapidly and unusably. So then I hit the Ctrl-F10 to tell the E-D activator to go into stereo mode. I think it has to be in interlaced or it doesn't work. This makes the glasses flicker at about the right speed. This causes 3D to work okay in the test app and some games, but there is a repeating jerkiness on the top half of the screen (even in the nVidia test app) which wasn't present before I ran the E-D activator.

Sadly, the Ctrl-F10 Activator function that turns on the glasses at a decent speed also switches out of the current 3d app and back to the desktop, which isn't a gigantic problem in some games, but it always causes Tribes 2 to crash.

Why did this E-D Activator make the nVidia test app stop working? I am guessing that the Activator tries to force it into interlaced mode, but the test app is in page-flip mode??

I'm totally lost and I can't think of anything but to scrap it all and start over from square one.

Didn't read your hole post but if you want to know..
I only use Nvidias controller. I like it since you can assign the different functions to your liking. I only use ED's controller if I want Interlaced or over/under mode which is by the way very rare. I haven't had any problems so far.

thanks. and no need to read the whole details ;)

i've also seen advice on this board that recommends using the h3d activator and not the ED one, and to use nVidia ver 67.76 instead of .77

dunno what to try first. i'll probably give the H3D thing a try since it should be easy. if that fails, i'll clear out the works and start over, trying to stick with only nVidia drivers.

you should get the update. the latest version 4 drivers really automated everything and worked for me without having to mess around. open a support ticket and ask for the latest drivers, they aren't posted yet online but they should be very soon from what they say.
