I know that stereoscopy is considered by many people as the essence of VR, but I'm also interested to learn about anything else that VR is: from body tracking to force feedback to tactile simulation. And I'd also like to exchange ideas with VR enthusiasts who build their own gear in their garages... in short, something like the newsgroup sci.virtual-worlds in the 90s. Does something like this exist... or is it a decade too late? |

Another essenc of VR is HW accelerated graphic - especialy the multiplatform pro one based on OpenGL API. So try http://www.opengl.org/ |

Accelerated graphics as an essence to VR? A link to www.opengl.org? That's definitely not with I had in mind! Come on, what is the first thing that enters your mind when someone talks about OpenGL? Computer games, that's what! And it's not even essential to VR: back in the days, VR enthusiasts were hacking around with Rend386, which supported software rendered stereo 3D through modified Sega shutterglasses and accepted input from a modified Nintendo Powerglove! I was really talking about the kind of info you can find at http://www.geocities.com/mellott124/index.htm and http://www.phoenixgarage.org/index.pl?cat=homevr But of course the info is badly outdated (especially for the second link... VictorMaxx? Oh, come on), so I was wondering if there is a site with updated info and a forum where people can discuss about experimenting with homemade/modified VR interfaces made with AVAILABLE COMPONENTS and able to work with MODERN COMPUTERS! Some time ago I tried to mail Kevin Mellott about it, but he never replied to my mail... |

Devil Master: You are a bit out of concept. First thing in my mind when I speak about games is DirectX, not such serious API as OpenGL ... Aslmos all good VR engines (eon, CAVELib) are OpenGL targeted. The list of application on www.opengl.org is the best summary of different VR codes ... What do you at first need for VR ? Reality like virtual image :-). And such image you can get only through detail study of HW acceelerated computer graphic. |

DevilMaster, Sad thing is not much has changed in the last 10 years in consumer VR (maybe longer). So those sites you mentioned are probably more up to date then you think. |

DM: Saw your message here, and thought I would comment. First off, I appologize about the outdatedness of my site/pages on VR (and in general, actually). I am working on it, and I hope to have something up in the near future. Hopefully, one of the areas of my site -will- be a discussion area on homebrew VR. One other thing I hope to be able to do (may be wishful thinking on my part, tho), is scan in my complete collection of PCVR magazine. This magazine was an informational goldmine to VR homebrewers back in the day, and much of it is still relevant. One other thing: you may think that the Stuntmaster isn't relevant any longer, and for the most part, you are right. However, they still can be found now and again on eBay. For the low interest level of VR (honestly, it seems like not many people are playing in it anymore), these one-offs are still useful. Interestingly, even the newest HMDs out there at prices which normal folk can afford are still at about the same resolution as the Stuntmaster (ie, around 320x200 res - if you are generous). However, I do agree with you that there should be a new forum. I hope I can help in that regard in the near future with a planned site upgrade. In addition, maybe we can take homebrew VR in a new direction, ressurect it from the ashes, maybe? At the very least, come up with new uses for the wiimote... |

Posting a reply to my last - ya, I know its gauche. Anyhow, I made the comment about affordable HMDs being not better than 320x200 - I stuck my foot in my mouth. There was a posting on the HMD thread about a "new" HMD coming out for around $500.00 that boasts 640x480 native res, plus 32 degree FOV. With that said... This isn't a bad thing - but it is comparable to my General Reality Cybereye HMD. I picked one of these up off of eBay a few years back. It was probably manufactured and sold sometime in the late 1990's. It has roughly the same spec, and actually isn't that bad of an HMD. But it isn't immersive, not in the least. Now, what I would like to see is a sub-$500.00 version of the Virtuality Visette 2/Pro - 640x480 or 800x600 res, with 60Hx40V FOV goodness: so close to the edge of full immersion that it is "good enuff" for most purposes. |

Hey Andrew L. Ayers, Thanks for wanting to start up a VR Forum. I look forward for it. |
