Hi I thought about using an old 4-colour inkjet printer for emitting scents that could make games more realistic. It should be done by re-filling the cartridges with some powerfully smelling liquids. Initially, with a 4-colour printer, only four separate scents would be available. Are there any olfactorologists (or whatever you call an expert in smell) here who could suggest four "basic" scents (and the chemicals necessary). I know that there probably exists thirty-something gerenic scents, but for starters, it might be possible with fewer. Remember WW2 fighter veterans talking about the smell of cordite when dogfighting? It could sure add to the realism. Guess one could have several cartridges, one for each game. The Need for Speed cartridge should contain burnt rubber, gasoline, leather and wunderbaum. And so on, and so on... it's soon weekend and my thoughts are drifting. One would also have to link the printer to the game somehow, but that's another matter. Comments, anyone? Alex Another route would be to apply many different scents to particular areas of a sheet of cloth or paper and then wrap the sheet around the cylinder of the printer. The cartridge could then contain some non-smelling solvent, which when applied to a particular area on the sheet would soak it and make it release the scent. That'd even work with a black and white printer. But I'm afraid the sheet wouldn't last long. |

The smell idea was used in both games and tv shows in the past. The game that uses this is larry7 where the game shows you a colour which u have to manually rub on a scentic paper... i think they had 9 scentes or so... just thought u might like to know |

A company called digiscents is out there now, I saw them at GDC. That is exactly what they are doing, but they just ran out of money, rumor has it, so I don't expect it any time soon. Steve@IIS |
