I read that Anchor Bay was going to release "Parasite" with Demi Moore in 3-D on DVD later this year, so I wrote to them for more information. Unfortunately, here is the response: "Right now it doesn't look like we will be able to release PARASITE in 3-D, but we will keep looking into it." I wrote back and encouraged them to consider a 3-d field-sequential version, perhaps as a limited edition version (they are known for putting out great limited edition dvd's). If Anchor Bay were to have any success with a 3-D dvd release, it would open the door for other films to be reissued by them. Their entire catalog is licensed from various studios, so they are in a great position to release the classics in 3-d. That is why I encourage everyone here to write to ANCHOR BAY in support of putting out PARASITE in a 3-D field-sequential version! Here is the email address: suggestions@anchorbayentertainment.com Their website is http://www.anchorbayentertainment.com If they receive enough requests, they just might do it! -Mug |

Bumping your message up to the top Mug! ..Anchor Bay puts out great special editions of a lot of what most would call "obscure material". I've sent a letter to AB, and I hope others follow up as well. By the way: 3DTV Corp once put out a 3DTV field- sequential version, but the quality was simply OK, as the film to tape transfer was marginal at it's time, even for small budget early 1990's film-to -tape transfer standards. But the 3-D effects of course were excellent. ...A new transfer using state of the art equipment would be a night and day difference. |

Actually, 3d cat, that's EXACTLY the kind of thing Anchor Bay does -- license cult and slightly more obscure films from studios and release them to collector markets. That's why sending them an email of support for a Parasite 3-D DVD release is so important -- If it's a success, it opens the door for future 3-d DVDs! -Mug |

Oh, studios will release 3-D movies all right, be they'll be "flat" versions only, like the DVDs already released in Region 1 below: ."Creature from the Black Lagoon" ."Friday the 13th Part III" ."Spacehunter" ."Emmanuelle IV" ."Robot Monster" Flat versions of Jaws 3-D (opps.. let's call that Jaws III) and "Revenge of the Creature" are now rumored to be released on DVD soon. Meanwhile DVDs with dual version letterboxed and pan-n-scan, or with standard editions with uncut editions are routinely released by the major studios on DVD. But 3-D versions are presented flat only, with the obscure Slingshot titles being the only exception. ..What a waste of the DVD format. |

Perhaps you have to understand what Anchor Bay does to understand why a 3-D DVD from them could be an important first step to future releases (from any studio). Anchor Bay does not make movies. They license titles from the studios (Warner Brothers, Paramount, Fox as well as smaller studios and foreign studios like Hammer) to release to smaller demographics. Studios have so many films in their vaults that they are only interested in releasing the ones they know will sell many quantities. That's why Paramount and other studios are not interested in releasing 3-D versions - the market for them is too small (although you can bet they are watching the sales on the Slingshot DVD's to see how well - or badly they sell). Anchor Bay doesn't have nearly the overhead of a large studio. They license titles from studios they believe they can market to specialized audiences and make a profit. Since they have lower overhead and spend less on marketing, they can make a profit selling at levels that a studio cannot afford to. If Anchor Bay were to release Parasite in a 3-D version, and the disc were to sell, that would show them there IS a market for 3-D films on DVD and encourage them to license other titkes for 3-D release (like House of Wax, F13, etc.) Since they are already looking into doing Parasite this way, the best thing we can all do is send them an email encouraging a 3-D version. If they get enough, we just may see it in stores later this year. Instead of giving reasons why they won't release 3-d movies, why not send them an encouraging email and take an active approach to getting what we want. Another real example - Warner Brothers recently reissued WILLY WONKA on DVD but only in full frame mode. Some guy started a web petition to release a widescreen edition, and the people who signed it said they would not purchase the DVD until they could buy it widescreen. 1 month later, Warners announced that they would release a wide screen edition early this year because of the emails and petition. If Anchor Bay gets enough emails, you can bet we'll see a 3-D dvd of Parasite. -Mug |

3-D Cat, you bring up a good point that I've often wondered myself: There are *many* 3-D films from the 1950's that will never see the light of day on DVD, but may get played on AMC or TCM classic movie channels one in a great while. A company like Slingshot or Anchor Bay should be able to get titles like these fairly cheap. I could name a lot of obscure 3-D films, or a lot of major 1950's 3-D classics, but I'll stick to just a few "minor but good" 3-D ones. ."Charge At Feather River" starring Guy Madison. This film has stereo sound and had many excellent 3-D effects. This 3-D color western was from Warner Brothers .Fort Ti (another Western, but from Columbia pictures) also has great 3-D effects, shot in color and with stereo sound. .The Maze (Monogram Pictures) A black -n- white cheezy horror film with 3-D and It Came From Outer Space's Richard Carlson to keep it together. .The Three Stooges shorts "Pardon My Backfire" and "Spooks" from Columbia Pictures. Classic Stooges and excellent 3-D. Shot in black-n-white. .Inferno (a 3-D, color with stereo sound thriller film was released by Fox) .Popeye: Ace Of Space, (A color 3-D cartoon from Paramount) .Stranger Wore a Gun (Color 3-D from Columbia) .Money From Home (Jerry Lewis, Color, Paramount) .Jivaro (Color western, Paramount) .Gorilla At Large (color, stereo sound, from Fox) .The Mad Magician (B&W, w/Vincent Price, Columbia) .Phantom of the Rue Morgue (Color, Vincent Price.. Warner Bros) .Lumberjack Rabbit (Bugs Bunny, color 3-D, by WB) .Boo Moon (Casper the ghost! In color/Paramount) .Bwana Devil (The one that started the 50s 3-D craze ..in color!) .Devil's Canyon (3-D color western from RKO) .Jessie James vs the Daltons (Color, Columbia) .Gun Fury (color / Columbia) .I, the Jury (B&W/stereo, w/Micky Sillane from United Artist) .Man In the Dark (B&W, ..Columbia's 1st 3-D release) .The Nebraskan (western in color from Columbia) .Sangaree (western in color, Paramount) .Second Chance (Jack Palance, color, from RKO) .Southwest Passage (Western, color, from United Artists) .Taza: Son of Cochice (Rock Husdon, color western, Universal great 3D) .Those Redheads from Seattle (musical from Paramount - color & in stereo) No "Miss Sadie Thompson", "Hondo", "House of Wax", Creature films.. or any other major A-list 1950's 3-D classics are listed above. ..The above films are not the bottom of the barrel either, (no Robot Monster, Cat-Women ..etc) as most of the above still run from time to time on cable TV. None of the minor 1960's, 70's or 80's 3-D films are listed either,..so more could be added. These films should be able to licenced for 3-D video... ** CHEAP! ** Something for Anchor Bay or Slingshot to think about. |

BTW, I have written to TCM (several years ago) about doing a 3D festival, late night or whatever. They always claim they show films as 'the directors intended.' They were polite. They said it would have to be advertised with a major marketer, and I think they were thinking red/green glasses would have to be provided by Pizza Hut or something. They also said the additional scans of the 3D prints would be expensive. They did NOT say no. When 'Kiss Me Kate' was aired last month, Osborn said they were showing it as most THEATERS did, 2D, instead of the 3D 'fad' had dictated it be made. Now I prefer field sequential DVD's, but I think Turner might be just as good a target as Anchor Bay; they make tapes too, and aren't afraid to put two versions (B&W and colorized, or LBX and normal) on a DVD. They own the rights to most of the 3D ever made. Besides, lots of the things Anchor Bay sell were only available to them because a big studio didn't want to market it. For example; only the Disney failures end up on Anchor Bay. Larry Elie |
