The Optio isn't a stereo camera. You can use any 2D-camera to take stereo-photos by shooting 2 images after another by using a tripod and a bar or something. The new feature in the optio is an electronic aiming assistant. You take one shot, then the LCD-monitor shows you where to aim next. Both shots are stored in one side-by-side format file. It's only usable for motionless objects. The camera comes with a stereo print viewer, comparable to the Loreo viewer. That's it. Better than nothing, but wouldn't a real 3-5 MPixel true stereo camera with 2 lenses be coooool? Here's a review and test-shot (in german): http://lamker.de/Optio_230/230_Stereomdus/body_230_stereomdus.html Christoph |

Dear Chris, The reason I respond more than half a year later, because I just ran into the Pentax Optio-ba. Lucky I checked after finding "sterescopic digital camera, Pentax Optio 230" and saw that it has only one lens. Lucky, because I was just about to order it. Seeing the one lens, I wrote to Pentax and asked, what method is being used to achieve 3d. Very polite answer explained pretty much the same you wrote in the above message. To which I wrote a letter, that I am surprised that a company with the reputation of Pentax, would implement stereoscopy in such a shabby and primitive way. Then I described that this is the right time to come out with a true sterescopic camera, because several obstacles in the past which prevented 3d pictures to become popular, partially gone away with the digital cameras, computers, since with the appropriate software (and camera of course) the entire process can be made automatic. I also pointed out the slight increase in popularity of the LCD glasses. Based on my letter Pentax surely won't rush and manufacture a stereoscopic digital camera, but if everybody from the 3d community would write to them, they may. Because it really IS the right time to come out with one. Gabor |

Umm... but for what price? Two Fuji 1300's (cheap, 1.3 MPixel cameras) side by side on a bar, and reasonable timing for the buttons and you have a 1.3 (2.6 ?) MPixel camera for less than $200 US. Put the two JPEG's together in Paint Shop Pro and re-name to *.JPS and you are done. If I knew any cheap 1 to 2 MPixel digitals that supported a remote shutter trigger I would be happier yet. At least these don't eat batteries, and I NEVER use flash (correct it in software, and my timing isn't THAT good). Sure, 2 lenses, 2 CCD's and 1 file would be nicer, but I have corrected every 2 D digital picture I have taken over the last year (over 2,000....) so it just isn't that big a deal. The quality isn't that much lower than the 2.7 MPixel camera I use for 2 D. |

I have tested PENTAX Optio33L and wrote review about 3D mode of camera. Look at photos to understand how it works: http://www.really.ru/review/pentax%203D.html |

Hi Larry, Where's a good retailer to find the Fugi 1300s? ..That sounds like a solid set-up! |
