A high resolution tracked HMD for under 500.00. Maybe this will give other companies a kick in the pants to produce what they've been promising for so long.
I know this HMD could be hacked pretty easily for PC use.

I went to Sony's corporate page, the resolution is 180k the same as the VFX1. But, for NTSC/PS2 viewing it does not need to be any higher. No stereo and the FOV is around 40. Sounds like it might be a winner in that market.

No Steve,

I read that the new sony HMD will contain two 0.44 in, 1.8 million pixel LCD's. This sounds similar to the Cy-Visor not the VFX1.

Steve was right,

The Japanese website says 180K displays but it says 25 Horizontal degree displays not 40.

Hahaha, that is the one piece of information I do not have yet! My guess is around $1,200-$1,500 for the stereoscopic version, but that is purely a guestimate.

Bring the price down to the $600-$800 range (the price you pay for a 22" crt nowadays) and people may actually pay for it.

22" crt will be roughly a true 20" screen. At close viewing range this will represent about a 32 degree FOV (based on m glasstron PLM-S700 experience). This HMD should give the impression of at least a 26" (real) screen at closs range. Worth at least the price of a real 26" screen, bearing in mind that the resolution will be less, but also that head-tracking is a possibilty? FOV is everything (if it includes stereoscopy :P).

But hey, that's only MY opinion, hahaha.

Spoke direct to Daeyeng and they say it should be available through their distributors including io-display systems.

In a nutshell:
OLEDs is an active display, i.e. basically a array of (for SVGA) 800x600x3(RGB) tiny LEDs, similar to those large-scale public video displays. IIRC, OLEDs ('organic' LEDs) consist of organic semiconductors, which are easier (and cheaper) to produce because the different substances needed can just be 'printed' onto the carrier, whereas crystal LEDs require different crystals for each colour, which make it a nightmare to re-arrange them into a small display.
OTOH, current HMDs usually use passive LCD displays, either transparent (like the Sonys) or reflective (LCOS) like the Daeyangs, which need a separate light source which, depending on the image, is more or less blocked by each pixel.
See http://www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/display/index.jhtml for details.

My fault for starting a new discussion within a thread. These are two different devices entirely. The Daeyang is not related to the Sony product in any way.
