I received an email from DTI that their 2d/3d switchable LCD screens are to be displayed at selected CompUSA stores beginning Nov. 21. I'm kind of excited to see them first hand. The text of the email is as follows: Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 16:52:17 -0500 From: Mike Doolin To: Subject: CompUSA Stores to Test DTI 2D/3D Displays Hi. Thought you'd like to know that CompUSA is testing our unique 2D/3D switchable LCD displays in ten of its top stores across the US, plus its company web site. The stores are in Bellevue and Tukwila WA (Seattle), Las Vegas, San Diego, Miami (two stores) and Ft. Lauderdale, Garden City NY (Manhattan), Columbia MD (Baltimore/Washington), and Plano TX (Dallas). Those locations are being stocked now and displays will be available in the stores starting November 21. This is a great opportunity for all who live within driving distance of one of these CompUSA stores to see the DTI 2D/3D Display in action. Both 15" and 18.1" models will be demonstrated. Please encourage your friends and family to visit their CompUSA store and check out the DTI Displays. And we would love some feedback on the experience in the stores. If you're not near one of these stores, visit the CompUSA web site (www.compusa.com) for more information and to order directly off their site. Just click on the DTI button at the bottom of their home page and it will take you directly to the DTI information and ordering page. And by the way, DTI 2D/3D Displays make terrific holiday gifts. Or just buy one for yourself! Thanks for your support and encouragement. We appreciate it. Arnie Lagergren, President And the rest of the DTI family |

These are LCD screens and it is true 3d. I believe, like the Sharp screen mentioned in they news section of this site, the use a method that has the same effect of lenticular lenses to deliver alternate eye views. They support all video and computer methods for generating 3d, though I am told there is a drop in brightness in the 3d mode from the 2d mode. You also must be in the sweet spot for viewing the 3d, but I read it is quite comfortable. The web site is www.dti3d.com. I've watched them for a while and their prices have dropped drastically recently, though I believe they are still quite expensive. It great to be able to judge for yourself. Steven |

I didn't realize the price of the screens had dropped so much. The 15" is now listed on DTI's site as $1699. I believe it use to be around $6000. Then there is an 18.1" for 5,995 w/o S-vide and 6,995 w/s-video. If its a good effect with page flipping for 3D video, I'll have to think about the 15" (though I don't know how to deliver page flipped video to the screen yet). |

Pageflip? No, it can display only Vertically interlaced mode. And I believe that it has a converter to change pageflip or Above/Below to Vertically interlaced mode on-the-fly. Am I right? |

Although I realize video delivered through the S-connection would be interlaced, I believe the screens can do page flipping as I was told it can handle all methods of delivering stereo. I did not get the impression they meant convert all modes to interlaced - one section on their web site mentions handling frame sequential 3d. I believe that is page flipping. The source for the files would have to reside on the computer, not a camera. |

Instead of wild guessing, why not just read the specs while you're online ? Start at http://www.dti3d.com/products.asp and find (for the 18" w. video input): User-Selectable Stereo Formats: Computer : Frame Sequential; Side-by-Side (left/right); Top-and-Bottom(over/under); Field Sequential(row interleaved) Video: Side-by-Side (left/right); Top-and-Bottom(over/under); Field Sequential Inputs/Misc: VESA Stereo Sync., 3-pin mini-DIN, for Frame Sequential operation I'm afraid, though, that converting row interleaved and top/bottom stereo formats into the column interleaved display format will cost another 50% of (horizontal) resolution... |

I've got a DTI 15" at my work, and it works really fine. It's about one year since we bought it (it was already at about 1700 $). It's true that it accepts without problems every 3D format I found on the web, and that it allows a good multi-user 3D experience (we reached 4-5 persons seeing 3D together). It's true that the best input format before it converts to vertical interlace is page flipping (frame sequential), because from interleaved (field sequential) and from top-bottom the "double" resolution loss (V for original and H for conversion) is noticeable. From page flip instead H resolution loss is not so bad. By asking them, DTI sent me libraries that I could include into my C++ VTK-based application for switching by software 2D/3D mode and which 3D mode. With Softquadro for windowed pageflipping the result is (IMHO) quite nice. Greetings Stefano Mininel Health Telematics Laboratory University of Trieste - Italy |

Stefano, Would you be able to state what Mhz CPU would be able to accomplish smooth playback of Page Flipped 3D Video? Would 850Mhz be adequate? Thanks, Steven |

Sorry Steven, this is beyond my knowledge. I tried a couple of 3D videos downloaded from the web and they appeared quite good but I'm not really an expert in this kind of quality evaluation. My CPU anyway is an Athlon 1400 with Asus 2V1D (GeForce 2MX, dual output) video card. |

Steven: The answer totaly depends on: What resolution do you want to use. What compression do you want to use. For mpeg2 compression you can use on your machine half PAL per eye res ... |

Thanks Stefano and Michal. In terms of the half Pal per eye res..., for me it would be NTSC. I would like very high resolution, so I understand you to mean that an 850 Mhz CPU would have to deliver page flipping in a less than optimal resolution. I'm trying to decide if going with this screen or the Cyvisor HMD would yield a more impressive (higher quality) 3D Video experience. I suppose half resolution per eye page flipping with column interweave would yield a poorer experience than the Cyvisor dual lens feed. I'm positing this because I'd like to know before buying. Unfortunately, no one on this board seems to have/use either of these systems for 3D Video. I'm led to believe again that Dual graphcs card output to Cyvisor with full resolution side by side stretched to two monitors would yield a better quality resolution. Do I have this correct? I'm not a techie at all, hence my fumbling for understanding. Thanks for the help. Steven |
