Slight nitpick: 'Handy' is the 'German' expression for what English speaking people call 'cell phone' or 'mobile'.. |

If memory serves me right, the Consortim first met in November of last year. As far as the group goes, I think it's sorely needed when it comes to universal standards for 3-D video. |

These guys at last have understood that necessary to do something, until not too late. Stereo monitor for today is a general tendency. Look for: http://www.stereographics.com/news_about_us/03news/pr010703.html And read this: A 2D-3D-switchable Display, several new 3D-LC Displays and a brand new 3D-Software Driver will be shown in Hanover. 4D-Vision GmbH, a Jena based company, will exhibit the world’s first 2D-3D-switchable monitor at the worldwide leading trade fair for information technology, telecommunication as well as software and services, the CeBIT 2003 in Hanover. The 15 inch prototype was developed in the past six months by the 4D-Vision hardware development department, in particular by Dipl.-Phys. Wolfgang Tzschoppe and Ingo Relke, PhD. It offers a spatial impression to multiple observers in 3D mode without glasses. Switching over from 2D to 3D and vice versa thereby just requires pressing a button. "Now offering the possibility to switch over from 2D to 3D, we are able to address a wide range of new users. These clients may use this next generation display for standard 2D office applications as well as for glasses-free 3D applications. This future product shall fortify 4D-Vision’s position among the worldwide top-flight manufacturers of 3D-Displays and shall help to acquire furt! her market shares," said Bernd Riemann, CEO of 4D-Vision GmbH. In the past years, only a couple of vendors offered 2D-3D monitors. But in comparison with the products of 4D-Vision, they provided a 3D impression to one single user only. The principle in use for the 2D-3D-switchability can be adapted to other LC-Display sizes, too. A further advantage of this solution is the full compatibility of 4D-Vision standard software used to drive the display in 3D mode. Furthermore, two brand new 3D-LC-Displays in 17 inch and 19 inch sizes will be shown in Hanover for the very first time. 4D-Vision intends to achieve series maturity of these LCDs still 2003. Both new LC Displays offer a better resolution than previous models but shall be sold at a lower price, nevertheless. The date for the market introduction has not been fixed yet. 4D-Vision considers in particular designers, constructors and users of computer games as target groups for these 3D-LC Displays in 17 and 19 inch sizes. Last but not least, 4D-Vision will also present a brand new piece of software. 4D-Vision’s software department developed an OpenGL-driver which enables OpenGL-based programmes such as design or engineering software to immediately drive 4D-Vision 3D-Displays. "This driver enables users for the first time to use professional software such as AutoCAD or 3D Studio Max in a ‘plug-and-play' mode and in real time with 4D-Vision 3D-Displays. The OpenGL driver as well as the high-resolution 17 inch and 19 inch 3D-LC Displays will address a tremendously large user spectrum," said Alexander Schmidt, head of 4D-Vision`s software department. |

Mmmh, I'm sure not here to be the attorney of DTI, but it annoys me to have to read "world’s first 2D-3D-switchable monitor" and several other "first ..." when my DTI 2015XLS has been on my desk at work for more than one year now and it IS 2D-3D-switchable AND multi-user. Nothing against advertisings, but I want them to be honest! |

Sharp has been really hot on 3-D LCD ever since they came up with an electrical switchable 2 & 3-D LCD's in 2001. There's some detail on their plans in Electronic Engineering Times Oct. 7, 2002. They own the intellectual property rights and are hoping to licence to the other consortia members in hope for a wider view angle breakthrough. |
