I've recently hacked my vfx3d with a new pair of optics.I've spent around 250 u.s. dollars for the lenses. Not an easy hack though. The FOV has increased tremendously with very little distortion at the borders.I think it's around 60 degrees now. Also the colors are more vivid. When I've tryed it I said 'wow ,that's virtual reality'. If anyone is interested I will put on my site photos and instructions for the hack. I'm now trying to find some LCD display with a very high res (>= 1024 x 768) for try to build my own HMD. Cheers Dago info@vrsystem.net http://www.vrsystem.net |

Ok , I will set up a page within a few days. About the i-glasses ,if I remember well VFX3D have the same optics and electronic regarding video. The only problem is that you need to rotate the visor by 90 degrees because you have to apply the lenses direcly on the lcd (like the old VFX1) replacing the default mirror system.in fact I used parts of my old VFX1 , the parts regarding moving the LCDs for regulate how much space between the 2 LCD.I dunno how to replace these parts but I think it's not so difficult to build something similar. It is possible with the VFX3D because you have a container for LCD/optic part in wich you can reposition the rotated display with some modify, but with i-glasses (I think) you can't wear them anymore. Any ideas? |

Dago, Will this FOV trick work on the VFX1 also?? Thanks Kevin |

Hey Kevin, A big YESS. I cannot prove it but I think you just have to detach the old lenses and replace them with the new one. I prepared a page with some pics and info. The images are not from the entire operation because I don't want to open my HMD again. If you look at the pics I used the binuculars of the VFX1. The link is at the bottom of my home page. http://www.vrsystem.net Cheers! |

I've bought them in Italy after a little search on the net.I think it should be not too difficult to find a reseller near to you. |

It's mine. I'm a musician and a software developer. It's a kind of clone of a song of the matrix I movie. |

Haha , thank you very much. That's the kind of things an artist likes to hear. I'm sorry but I just composed it for my web site and there is nothing more than what you've heard. Maybe one day I will add a section for download my sound tracks. Not so easy with the legal stuff though.I have to pay even if I give the songs for free. |

Dago, Do you have the spec of those optics? I have an i-glasses, the FOV is killing me and would like to do the same to it. However, I think i-glasses use prisms. I have think of some new ways of doing it. |

Dago, Check this out, except it is not 15x. Will it work without take the original lens out? http://www.shopallenbeys.com/allenbeys/clip-on-monoculars-magnifier-magnifying-magnifiers-magnify-p-ej-491000-13.html |

BOPrey, I don't have knowledge background about lenses. I just had the luck to be in a place where I had the possibility to try a lot of lenses. At 15x you get the maximum magnification of the LCD surface without cutting the edges of the LCD (well, not too much at least). If you go higher the FOV of the eyepiece will be more narrowed. If you take a 10x ,well,I think it will be just like the original magnification. Maybe the cheap 15x you pointed would be good too, but think that at 15x you will get a lot of distortions with a poor lens. The one I pointed has a group of lenses for correct distortion and chromatic aberration. Maybe it's possible to get higher magnification with a custom set of lenses, but I think we really need some expert in this field. I know there is an eyepiece called 'nagler' used for telescopes that have 82 degrees FOV (!), so maybe it's possible to have the same FOV magnifing a little LCD?? P.S.: I Just ordered 2 Erfle eyepieces , 60 degrees FOV from surplusshed.com I'll let you know... |

Dago, I have a question for you. Since you increase the FOV of that unit, which I know has a lower resolution than 800x600, do you see the individual pixels on the display? How much does the increase in FOV affected the display quality? |

Yes, you can clearly see the pixels. But the immersive feeling has increased so much that in no way I would go back to the old FOV. The image is more clear.I can play quake II and see also the darkest ambients. Before the mod. in some level I had to switch to monitor. |

No. you cannot do the same to the i-glasses. I-glasses use reflective prisms instead of direct lens. My guess is that you can build a miniture scope for it as the image you see (virtual image) is about 7 feet away. |

Dago, I did some search on the net and found there are quite a few types of lupes. They are as following Scale Lupe Peak Lupe Kenko Lupes Horizon Lupes Hama Lupes Do you know their differences are other than they come in different shapes? If you look in here, I can only see their differences are in their shapes. http://www.camerastore.com/dl_cat_M/-M00_master.html |

PEAK SCALE LUPE 15X 2016 This is exactly what I used. I tried a lot of other lenses but this seems to be the one with the wider FOV. |

There are a few way to magnify an image. One way is to use lens, another uses a concave mirror. A magnifying reflexive prism works exactly the same way as a concave mirror except that it has better reflexivity. |

So would we have to find something like that , that would magnify the image more? Maybe wider FOV, seeing there is 800x600, making it bigger wouldn't be to bad. Pixel wise!!.. I hope dago makes something happen, that would be cool... Ku |

I would not make a 800x600 image more than 40 degree field of view. To obtain 90 to 120 field of view, the image would have to have 1600x1200 res to be reasonably good quality. Current micro-displays tech can do 12xx by 10xx, please don't ask about the price since it is going to take way more than a few years for it to come down to a generally affortable range. The reason that the price of 800x600 micro-displays is affortable is the mass market of projection TVs, not the demand of HMDs. I think that to produce a high res HMD, manufacturers have to think out of box and find some alternatives other than micro-displays. |

Here is a company that sells binocular glasses for sports viewing. They might work. http://www.event-view.com/ It has 2x magnification, so that should double your field of view with the i glasses. |

Hi, Have you guy's checked out http://www.contouroptics.com/info/features_benefits.shtml They claim thier lens's are anatomically correct to the shape of the eye and they can give you a 40% wider (distortion-free) field of view than regular flat lens's. Might be something to look into?!? Great forum here! This is my first time posting here and I've been reading up alot about VR for the past few week's and everything seem's quite interesting... I tend to be more of a hand's on person myself and was thinking of buying a book (I forgot the name of it right now) that goes over the basics of "home-brewing" so I can build my own 3D HMD. I'll probably be making the frame from carbon-fiber and a resin so that I can customize it to the exact component's I'll need to install...once I learn what all those are ;) Good Luck guy's |

Concerning a direct replacement of the VFX1 lenses to improve quality and FOV.. I think we need some more input here. There must be a best 'price for performance ratio here'. I can't spend alot on money in my VFX1s when the i-glasses svga can do 800 x 600 and has over 1.44 million pixels for around a grand. Seems a little silly to spend alot for expensive optics. If someone knew the cheapest price for ?? FOV and ??? quality? I'd like to know. Thanks! |
