Colleges, All i have seen was bad quality fims in analyth (also showed by very bad projecting system) and a few films in Imax (first, my eyes was killed by nice 3d effects, in 50 min they were killed in phisical way ;). My budget is about 3500$, with no possibility to return non-workiing unit, or test the product before buy. So actualy i can't test the product before buy. What do i want: 90% of 3d stereo gaming(PC, Nvidia), 10% wathching DVD. But i can sacrifice DVD watching if PC gaming expirience will be much more intresting becouse of 3d I have three choises: 1.HMD, 2.Projector 60HZ + analyth or yellow/grey filters glassess, or i don't know if it is possible with my budget - 120HZ Projector with shutter glasses (BTW - what is min cost for such stuff?). I am not going to buy polarization stuff - that really kills ny eyes. 3. 21' Crt +Shutter glasess. I will try to find CRT with lowest number of phosphor inside ;) The criteria for me - the gaming expirience i will get using that stuff. So please geamers answer - what is giving you more? The game list is RTS (3d of course), WoW, 3D shooters - i don't need to read texts. |

You have 4 choces (I wote for the 4-th one). 4. 2 projectors, non depolarizing projection screen, dual output graphic card (nVidia), passive glasses |

I´d say CRT + fresnel lense + shutterglasses. Cheap. Supposedly GREAT immersion. I´ve just ordered a fresnel lense. Hoping it lives up to my expectations. |

I say DLP projector with a pair of analyph glasses. Lars, Please tell us how big the screen become when you install the fresnel lense. You setup is fine. However, finding a crt with a high enought refresh rate at high resolution is difficult. My 19 inch crt can only go up 75Hz at 1600x1200. |

What is freshnel lense? Please post the link. It is not a big deal to find 19'' with 1024*768 with 125 or 140 HZ. Bigger resulotion is not realy noticeble, plus you can't get 70 fps in modren games (Far Cry, D3) at 1600*1200. |

A fresnel lense magnifies your monitor screen and at the same time sets the focal point at monitor screen depth or "behind" the monitor. Since you can set the lense much closer to your eyes this way, you can get huge screen sizes, also depending on how far from the monitor you set your fresnel lense. A good fresnel lense doesn´t distort the image even in the edges of the image. I´m aiming at x1,5 monitor at 1024x768 or more (for a lot of games, such as Far Cry I´ll get bad FPS above that). I got my monitor set at 1280x1024 at 85Hz however. I bought my fresnel lense here: http://www.lessgauss.com/magicstd.html, but if your not too choosy, you can get one a lot cheaper. Like this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=174&item=4135641161&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW |

But why do you need it? 21'' starts form 500$, and belive me it is already huge ;) Or it is in some way decrease phosphor time? Sergey |

21" is not huge in my opinion. 30" and above is huge. |

With the new fresnel lense my monitor screen could in theory be 57". But since I can´t get a resolution much more than 1024x768 without flicker with my shutterglasses, I think 30" is the maximum. |

What makes you think you can wear a helmet with a FOV over 60 and not get sick or dizzy? Everyone wants 80, 90 FOV. Well have you even tried to play with something round 60 or above for awhile. Narrow might not be as bad if the quality of the HMD was fully inclosed and sound is perfect. The 3d would help alot. I'd still pick a HMD over a projector no matter how big the screen can be, im sure if you had a Sony LDI 3d Lars you would be happy!!! |

Hello, would putting a fresno lens IF cut to the size of the lens of a pair of glasses work to make the screen closer to the eyes? Anybody experience this or will it just be a blur.... |

Why would you like to have the screen closer to your eyes? Image size? |

No. Anonymous. You CAN'T cut a fresno lens like cuting a piece of glass, and no one will cut it for you. To have fresno lens fit your glasses frame, they have to be custom made. |

i own a HMD and it s not really good ( forget it ) i plan to purchase the Benq 6200 DlP projector to use with shutterglasses. It s suppose to work and kick ass. With your money u can purchase it and it s the best kick ass choice. i remake my basement just for that right now, so i hope it works great. someone with a DLP infocus X1 tell us here that it works. So the Benq 6200 is better, So its gonna be hell of an experience. I m gearing myself for DOOM 3. I just want to come the nights it s out. and u know what... i will be ready. |

Unclebob here Cryingfoot. Where did you get your information about the Benq? Not all DLP projectors will work with shutterglasses - else this and other forums would be full of postings, best settings etc. This is to do with how the signal is processed inside to synch with the shutterwheel that gives the picture colour. Infocus seem to be the safe bet and not all their models seem to respond well. Have just bought an X1 (they definitely work - multiple posts on this from different folk on many forums) as they are heavily discounted at the moment and in the UK can be had for less than £500+VAT... If not happy with shutterglasses another £500 or so gets me a passive polorised set up... Intend to share the experience over the next few days as it should arrive tommorrow or Monday. If you have bought the Benq let me know how it works out and I'll add it to several threads I've started on this topic and then collate the information in one web page to help other 'pioneers'! All the best |

the i-glasses 3D Svga. It s too expensive. to much wire, boring to wear. do u want more ? really uncomfortable, sound is cheap and painless to wear. As for the benq 6200. it s really better than the X1. he have a 3X color wheel speed and 1024x768 resolution at a refresh rate of 100hz. http://www.projectorcentral.com/home-theater-multimedia-projectors.htm the benq6200 is not at the top cause of the price. But for me it s only 1024x768! |

What Lars say about HMD is true. However, I think their image quality is not that bad. The narrow field of view and poor resolution are show stoppers. Why, I own one. Aside paying amount a thousand US, it is collecting dust most of the time now. For the future, manufacturers are not going to make wide FOV HMDs just because narrow FOV has a much much bigger market than the gamers market. |

yes u have wire on a CRT monitor, but u dont wear it. Think about that. u have a power wire and a VGA cable on your back and if u want a motion capture for your head add a wire. you are more plug than the matrice! |

I have a Fresnel that I used with my 19" Sony Trinitron monitor. I bought a thick quality lens that was about 25"x18". It was too big for my application so I etched it with a razor knife on all 4 sides to keep the middle in the middle and broke it along the score marks like a piece of glass. Cut it down to 14"x11". The lens was 13" from the monitor. I was 18" from the lens. The screen size was about 25". Made for some nice stereoscopic gaming but there was enough distortion at the edges to make text uncomfortable to read. It is very important to box in your lens so that no ambient light gets between it and your monitor. Good luck on your new lens. John |

I recently got a fresnel lens: http://www.vrlens.com believe me, it's like having an arcade VR machine. Your entire visual field is immersed in image. I don't have shutterglasses but somehow it looks quite 3D, especially in space games. I think the 3d effect is down to the position of the virtual image in space. The middle of the image appears far away and the edges appear closer. It's like projecting into a cone shaped screen (but with everything in focus). |

Mike: My monitor is 19", but with the fresnel lens it´s about 26"-27". I can still read all the text, even on the sides. The immersion is no less than awesome! I did´n t have to box in the lens, cause I allready got a housing with it when i bought it. Racing game? I have´nt tried one out yet with the lens, but I suppose it´s just as great as with all the other games. |
