I am tired of shutter glasses, I am tired putting up with all the ghosting, and poor quality. I want to move my head and look in every direction in a 3d scene. Explore in a 3D world, not sit in my chair facing forward and my eyes focused on a monitor. Unfortunately I have found after days of scouring the net not one single decent HMD. The closest I have seen is the 3D I-Glasses, but the low 180k resolution is pathetic. Lets spend 599 and get horrible resolution or spend 1800 to get a VFX3D and get better but still bad resolution with poor image quality to boot hmmmmmm, tough call. I just want someone out there to design a decent not to flashy or expensive HMD that has decent resolution, 800x600 is decent in my mind, I would probably even buy a 640x480 resolution if the price was right. (not $1,800!!) Whats worse is when I see a brand new HMD being released and see the promise it has, like the Siemans Global Pl@yer and find that it will not even work on a PC. Has anyone else dealt with this same frustration? I would love to hear from someone that bought an HMD and tell me how they fare in 3D games. Was it worth the money, do you regret the purchase? One day someone will actually ask someone like me what an HMD should have in it and what it should cost. Sigh, oh well maybe next year.... Smokey |

Any link to the Siemens thing? If it's not made for PC, we can convert it! (TM) |

The link is at: http://www.stereo3d.com/siemensvr.htm But where du you read the words about that its not workin on a pc? It just says that its not only a pc addon. Its more! More like a full-multimedia-experience..bla bla bla. This siemens head gear is just a prototype and not a final product. And ofcourse it will be pc compatible when/if it´ll get out of the door. Otherwise, i totally agree with your post. I think there are loads of people just waiting for the first, decent "one" thats gonna change out gaming experiences. regards JOhan |

In mid August, i-O Display Systems will be releasing the i-glasses SVGA. This new model will feature true 800X600 resolution, and the 3D capable model will be priced around $1,099.00. |

Sorry, if my article on the Siemens was misleading. My personal impression is that it was a marketing stunt for CeBIT. There seem to be no plans to come out with a HMD anytime soon. On the other hand they may surprise us again. There's a lot going on in the microdisplay area currently. Christoph |

In the article Christopher says "not a PC add on"... Christopher, thanks for the reply. I am greatly looking forward to the new I-Glasses from I-O systems. I will definitely be a customer if everything you say is true! Thanks for the information. Thanks to all for your input, it is greatly appreciated. Smokey |

Johan, I didn't get the 'MORE' part. Christopher described it as a self-contained gaming device of sorts and perhaps a personal viewing device to watch movies with, ... "not as a PC Add-on". Which sounds pretty specific to me, that it will not be a PC SVGA Display Device, and while you could probably use a converter to make it so you could play your PC games, it would not give you stereoscopic depth, it would just be another ntsc/s-video personal viewing device. Which makes me sad; becuase the real promise of an HMD is that it has the unique ability to deliver truly immersive 3D. Warm Regards, Smokey |

Here's the direction I'm trying: Nvidia card with TV-out (not HD yet), stereoscopic glasses with flicker reduction for 60 hrz (like EyeFX 3D coming for XBOX) and 5.1 surround sound. Of course, I still couldn't turn the head, but the comfort of a couch at 7 feet away is better than a used office chair and a 21" monitor. (Actually I haven't tried this yet because the flicker-free glasses don't seem to be available for PCs with TV-out). Hell, just get an XBOX and a $2,000 HDTV and the flicker-free glasses. If you want to walk around touching a smelling the environment, just go to the park. |

Don't expect too much from the Global Player. It is a prototype, but very far from a real product status. I tried to get a try, but the marketing dept. of Siemens was not very cooperative at all. It is more or less a prototype application to demonstrate the transmission of video-signals via dect-telephone standard. The "invention" comes out of the telecomunication dept. Alaric |

Looks very interesting Craig. I am not sure how you will do the stereoscopic imaging though, as most software seems to use frame swapping instead of a dual-monitor configuration. I guess you could always combine your design with a pair of shutter glasses but you may lose FOV. Do keep us posted on your progress though. Who are you going to use to supply the optics? |

Hello Ray, The flight sim software Falcon 4.0 is being "hacked" by Falcon enthuseast. There may be a future networked version where a single session can be run on two PC's. This would allow a display for each eye. I have only done a preliminary review of optics for this aplication. I hope to puchase the optical components from a surplus supplier. Thanks, Craig |
