News from Brightland: 9/15/01 We have been developing software in-house to rapidly convert any 2D image into very high quality stereo3D. The current version of the software allows the artist to convert a 2D image into stereo3D in a matter of minutes. This is custom software using Akumira(TM) technology, so the artist sees full color, high quality stereo3D with low cost red/cyan glasses while they are working. The software will work on any monitor, including flat panels, notebooks, etc. In addition to standard mouse input, we also support the Wacom Intuos tablets, which allow even more control and speed in converting 2D images into 3D. The software is far easier to use than by hand using Photoshop, or custom plugins for Photoshop, and is much more fun. The software is called Akumira23 (2D to 3D), and is geared for production environments to convert large numbers of 2D images into 3D for content-based websites, CD-ROM products, and print media (books, magazines, calendars, etc.). We are not planning on releasing a consumer version of the software, so exclusivity is guaranteed. However, partners may offer 2D to 3D conversion services to consumers. The current version of Akumira23 approaches the stereo3D quality of native 3D photos, and total capture/production time is pretty close to shooting in native stereo3D. When compared to the challenges of shooting in stereo3D, with large existing libraries of quality 2D images, Akumira23 is very attractive and cost effective. We are considering releasing Akumira23 to stereo3D partners for revenue generating websites, books, magazines, CD-ROMs etc. This would allow many companies to create their own Akumira stereo3D content for sale in various markets. There are currently no high-quality stereo3D websites, as shooting in stereo3D or converting 2D to 3D has been cost prohibitive. The Akumira23 solution will allow our partners to very quickly convert existing 2D content into stereo3D, giving them an advantage over their competitors only displaying content in 2D. In some cases, additional revenue can be created by selling various red/cyan 3D glasses. For subscription-based websites, red/cyan glasses can be given away for free. For those of you who are not familiar with Akumira, please see http://www.brightland.com/akumira/akumira.htm. The quality rivals shutterglasses and the total cost of image delivery is far less expensive (free in cases where glasses are given away for advertising/marketing). The production package will include tools to convert native stereo3D image pairs, interleaved 3D video (as produced by the NuView and Canon XL1s hardware), and Akumira23 for 2D to 3D conversions. Training and marketing assistance is also provided. This is a unique revenue-generating business opportunity and requires up front license fees and very small royalties. There is currently no competition in this market and the possibilities are unlimited. If you are interesting in becoming a commercial Akumira stereo3D content partner, please contact me.
