I am new to this, I hear Nvidia has good stereo support but how about ATI

Simple answer: ATI has no support for stereo on normal user level (means for standard graphic card moldels and games). Profesional ATI cards from the FireGL series support OpenGL stereoscopic modes (useful for profesional stereoscopic applications).
