anyone have this working? i want to disable the pixel-shifting stereo and use true quad buffer stere but the nvidia stereo drivers seem to only support the former. i am using forceware 78.11 on a dell M70. this used to work fine a few months ago but somehow the driver upgrade screwed up my quad buffered stereo. thanks for any help. kevin |

All page-flipped stereo displays are "quad-buffered," whether they use DirectX 3D (the nVidia consumer stero driver) or OpenGL Stereo (the nVidia Quadro professional driver). Are you trying to use the consumer DirectX stereo driver with your professional Quadro graphics card for gaming, or do you want to use the professional OpenGL driver, which is better for 3D video? |

just to clarify, the distinction i'm trying to make between quad buffered stereo apps and pixel shifting is there are some opengl stereo drivers that simply take the depth buffer and back-compute 2 view frusta, shift the left and right pixels slightly and give pretty decent stereo. what i'm calling "true quad buffered" stereo is the application creates 2 view frusta, one for each eye, and writes to the left and right back buffer. nvidia seems to have shifted from the latter to the former with the new video drivers. i.e., i used to be able enable opengl stereo, which meant "turn on the quad buffers, and my app will write to them." the new drivers seem to interpret turning on opengl stereo as "take my non-stereo application, and make it stereo by shifting pixels based on the depth buffer." anyway, i've solved the problem, i rolled back to the 6771 drivers and the stereo drivers work fine. i'd appreciate any input as to whether my interpretation is right or not. thanks for your quick response. kevin |

Sorry, Kevin, I don't know the specific answer re: your interpretation of the pixel shifting. (Perhaps some of the gaming experts reading this forum can post a detailed technical explanation.) I have found, however, that routinely upgrading nVidia drivers isn't always a good idea if you're satisfied with the older ones. The newer versions sometimes have buggy OpenGL Stereo functions, which apparently aren't a top priority with the nVidia developers. Since the older drivers may no longer be available on the internet for download, it's smart to save a copy of the older driver before testing a newer one, so you can re-install the original driver if necessary. |

thanks for the replies charles, i appreciate them. you are absolutely right about keeping the old nvidia drivers around. lesson learned. kevin |

Hey guys, I need help too! I mangaged to get my employer to buy the Dell M70 in hopes that I could do stereo on the work computer. I can't get any of the consumer stereo drivers to work with the 78.11 drivers, which by the way seem to be the only drivers that will work with this Dell Quadro FX Go 1400. I have only used the consumer stereo drivers in the past and have no idea how to use the or where to get the nVidia professional OpenGL stereo drivers. Any help will be much appreciated. Harolddd |

Harolddd: Go to http://www.nvidia.com, then click your way through "Download Drivers" to "Graphics Driver" to "Quadro" to "Windows XP/2000." This will lead you to the current nVidia Quadro driver (81.67), which includes the professional OpenGL driver. When you install the Quadro driver, the openGL Stereo portion is automatically installed, and your Quadro card should recognize it. I can't say if this latest driver has any bugs in its OpenGL Stereo that nVidia hasn't gotten around to fixing. As I stated above, this is sometimes a problem with new nVidia releases. |

Charles, Thank you. I tried to install the lastest drivers today and got an error message-- "No compatible hardware detected" The older 78.01 gave the same message. Perhaps the Quadro FX Go 1400 int the Dell M70 is different than the desktop Quadros. I wish I could keep trying different drivers, but I have to beg the IS guys to try the drivers for me, they won't give me administrative rights. Anyone else install these drivers, or some driver other than 78.11 on the Dell M70? Harolddd |

More on the Dell M70 Quaro FX Go 1400. I don't find any obvious panel with controls for OpenGL pro stereo. Could it be that installing the consumer stereo drivers screws up the OpenGL pro drivers that were originally there with the Dell installed 78.11 drivers. Yes, my only reason for wanting stereo on the laptop is to have a quiet portable machine for showing stereoscopic video. Hope I can get it to work with the OpenGL pro drivers. Hddd |

Harolddd: I'm not familiar with Dell, but with most Quadro systems, the professional OpenGL Stereo feature won't function if nVidia's consumer stereo driver is also installed on the computer, even when the consumer driver isn't switched on. Try completely uninstalling the consumer stereo driver, so that only the Quadro driver is left. Then you should be able to locate the OpenGL features by right-clicking on your Windows XP desktop and going through the "Display Properties" window that pops up. Click on the "advanced" button, and you should get a window that includes a tab with "Quadro FX 1400" on it. Click on that tab to open a window with a list of Quadro options including "OpenGL Settings" and "Additional OpenGL Settings." The stereoscopic option is in the "Additional..." section. Unless Dell's proprietary Quadro card driver behaves differently than the Quadro drivers on nVidia's website, this should work. (You MAY have to reinstall the Quadro driver after uninstalling the consumer stereo driver.) |

Thank you again Charles. I didn't know the consumer stereo dirvers would conflict with the OpenGL stereo drivers. My mistake was having the IS guy install the consumer stereo dirvers before I had a chance to play with the machine. Part of the problem of having to go through a bureauracy that controls your computer. I REALLY hate that. I will ask them to uninstall all drivers and reinstall the originals. I'll report back if that works. Hddd |

Harrold: No need to deinstal the consumer drivers. Jsut put them in "Disable" state ("Enabel by hotkey" is not enought). |

I was never able to enable them, and attempts to get the OpenGL to function have not worked. So I'll give it another try, then try uninstalling the consumer stereo drivers. Hddd |

Hi, I use a Dell M70, too and got it working with the NVidia 71.84 Stereo Driver. It's important as usual that the driver and stereo driver do have exactly the same version number. Therefore the 71.84 is the only one which works on the Dell M70 in stereo3d. The issue is that Dell don't support any NVidia driver revision. You will note that if you compare the offered driver from Dell on their support/ download webpage. I got it working with dual-vga output via the Dell d/dock (dockingstation) which supports dual VGA outputs. To make sure that the driver works fine, I would suggest that you uninstall all privious drivers first and then to clean possible NVidia files via the freeware driver cleaner pro. Then install the 71.84 driver and stereo3d driver package. Note: if you want to use dual-vga, etc. you need to hack the registry settings (described in this forum), because that driver version don't show all stereo3D viewing methods as default. I didn't got stereo3d running under OpenGL CAD software and/or other prof. software products. Currently it works only with games on DirectX. If someone else can help on that Open GL matter that would be great. |

Harolddd: If all else fails, contact Dell's online support and ask for the help that they're obligated to give you. Surely Dell wouldn't dare sell a computer with Quadro hardware that couldn't access the professional OpenGL Stereo function if properly configured. |

Hello, I have a DELL Precision workstation 670 with nVidia QUADRO FX 3400. I downloaded the driver from Dell support website (77.56). I did not install the stereo driver provided by nVidia. (Now I understood the difference between customer driver and professional driver... thanks (Charles is right)) When I change the parameter "enable stereo" in settings of driver, my opengl application works fine but no signal is sent to the emitter... I use crystal eyes workstation from stereographics. Anybody knows how to activate signal for the emitter?? |

Widmont: If the 3-pin mini-DIN plug on the emitter cord is plugged directly into the DIN jack on the Quadro card, the signal through this jack is activated by selecting the "Use on-board DIN connection" option in the "Enable stereo in OpenGL" section of the Quadro display menus. (The "Use shutter glasses" option is used only if your emitter or wired shutter glasses are connected to the computer via a VGA dongle; this option deactivates the Quadro DIN jack.) |

Thanks Charles, effectively the 3-pin min DIN is plugged directly into the DIN jack, but there is no "Use on-board DIN connection" in the list... I was so close... Can I change a registry key to enable this mode anyway?? Or change the driver version ?? the list is: 1) use shutter glasses 2) use color interleaved monitor 3) use vertical interlaced monitor 4) use nView Clone Mode 5) use blue-line-code for stereographics product But none of them seem to work... |

There is no list of "DIN connector" for the stereo type with the latest driver, just modify manually the registry item "Ogl_APIStereoMode" with 03. It will be okay. Got from another topic on this forum W. |

It's absurd to sell a computer with an expensive professional-level graphics card, and then not provide the user with all the options needed to take full advantage of its capabilities. If Dell actually left off the "DIN connector" option from its current Quadro display driver, that's an inexcusable error by Dell's technical staff. |

I had overluked you have Quaro FX Go 1400. This card probably does not use a DIN-3 conenctor at all - ant this is the reason why it is not leiste din the drivers ... You must use: 1) use shutter glasses And than you must use some dongle (see http://shop.gali-3d.com/katalog_detail/katalog_detail.php?id=109) for the galsse signla extracion. |

Unfortunately, M.H. is correct. I looked up the specifications on the Quadro FX 1400 series, and the "GO" version doesn't have a DIN stereo synch port -- apparently because it's designed to fit in a notebook computer. So perhaps I should blame nVidia rather than Dell, but I still think it's absurd not to include a DIN port on EVERY professional-level Quadro card, including those in notebooks. Users shouldn't have to sacrifice that feature just because they want a portable computer. Having to carry a VGA dongle around in addition to the other stereo equipment doesn't contribute to the portability. |

I tried two drivers with a QUADRO FX 3400: 61.82 with option "Use on-board DIN" connection... the signal is sent to the emitter all is ok 81.67 with option "use shutter glasses" because "Use on-board DIN" is not present in the list and the signal is still sent to the emitter by the DIN connector... "use shutter glasses" option works also with DIN connector... May be they change the behavior of "use shutter glasses" into new drivers... do not take in count my previous message and if you have an emitter connected to the din connector, choose the option "use shutter glasses" I hope that my experience is useful (I wasted a lot of time) |

Widmont: On my system at least (Quadro FX 1100 card, 71.84 driver), when I switch from "Use on-board DIN" to "Use shutter glasses," both the VGA dongle and the DIN port sometimes function simultaneously until I reboot. Then the program turns off the DIN output, and only the VGA dongle carries the synch signal. Have you tested to see if both outputs still work on your system after rebooting? |

Widmont: The nVidia website usually has "User's Manuals" in downloadable PDF format for its current drivers, but these manuals aren't always as helpful as they should be. The best way to get detailed useful information on specific drivers is to do an Internet search for nividia, gaming, and stereoscopic forums like this one, where drivers are frequently discussed. Try a Google (or Yahoo) search for "nvidia" AND "forum", or for "nvidia" AND "77.56," and you'll get a long list of websites to check out. |

Want to let you know that I did get the Dell Precision M70 with Quadro FX Go 1400 to display stereo video using the Quadro drivers. It was a big mistake to install the consumer stereo drivers. I uninstalled the consumer stereo drivers and the video drivers then reinstalled the nVidia 78.11 drivers that came with the laptop. I was able to use Stereoscopic Player and Stereo Movie Player in OpenGL stereo mode. I've hooked the Dell Precision M70 to my Microtek M4 projector. It will show 800x600 at 85hz. I can't see any flicker. There is a very slight color difference between the right and left views, but you don't notice it. I have 12 pairs of wireless glasses. Now I'm ready to show friends some 3D video Also, I notice that you can view stereo in a window on the Windows desktop, not just in full screen mode. IIRC you can't do that with the consumer stereo drivers. Thanks to Charles and others for their info ;) Harolddd |
