Hey everyone, I just saw something really wierd happen on my Windows XP desktop, and I was wondering if any of you ever saw it or could see it too (I'll tell you how). Actually it's my web browser and Sun's JAVA plug-in that seem to be making it happen. I open a tiny little HTML file (which I'll tell you how to create below) in my browser, the screen goes black for a moment, then the desktop reappears and it is flickering -- turns out the desktop is now page flipping! If I put on my Z800 HMD (in stereo mode), one eye sees the browser window blank, while the other eye sees a gray box in that same window. If I click & drag the window, the one with the gray box moves, while the other one stays in the same spot, like it's not getting any draw updates. The gray box has a red "X" in it and is where Java has failed to run an applet. So it seems to be the Java Virtual Machine that is causing this. If I right click the gray box, the JVM's context menu pops up ("Open Java Console" & "About Java"). Choosing either one opens a window on both sides, but only on one side can I drag it. Any ordinary windows that I bring up via the OS only appear on the side that's being updated. I have 2 NVIDIA cards (same behavior on both PCs) and the NVIDIA stereo drivers installed. It happens in both Firefox and IE. The JVM is Sun JAVA 2 Standard (version 1.4.2). Anyone have any idea what's going on here? I'm very curious about it and would appreciate hearing anybody's thoughts. I don't know if it's strictly Java, or some quirk in the NVIDIA drivers. Here's how to make it happen: (please trust that I'm not trying to mess up you or your PC! This should be perfectly safe!)
1. Create a text file, you can name it anything, but give it a .HTML extension. 2. Edit it and add the following line: <applet/> 3. Save it. That's it! 4. Double click on the file to open it in your browser window. Of course that "applet" the JVM will fail to load.
I hope you can see what I described... and that you don't think I'm just smoking the wacky weed or something. Thanks for humoring me if you try this... Now someone please tell me what you think is happening! - TJ |
