The amount of time that shutter glasses can be worn for 3-D viewing either with a projector or on a monitor varies greatly from person to person, so there is no single answer. Some people's eyes feel uncomfortable after a few minutes, while other people can play for well over an hour without problems.

As a general rule, continuous out-of-screen "in your face" effects decrease the comfort time before eye strain is felt. So adjusting horizontal parallax to reduce these effects, when possible, will prolong comfortable playing time.

We have animators who use alternate-eye glasses for much much longer periods than that without complaining about eyestrain or stereo problems -- although they do complain about seating, working in darkened rooms and other ergonomic issues regularly.

One sine qua non is that the stereo is absolutely correctly rendered. Any vertical shift, wall-eyeing, etc would become unviewable in a very short time.

Alatar:
Since your animators are wearing shutter glasses all day at work, does your company use a professional-level brand like StereoGraphics or NuVison?

Uhm....

Didn't we go through this before? We use modified Imax 3D shutter glasses -- I believe I owe you a picture etc.

Added: ah yes, I just read your email. I guess we've both lost the thread here to some extent.
