Anybody seen this? http://www.neovisionlabs.com/ Looks like a lenticular overlay for PMPs. Now I don't know how many of you guys have PMPs, but this is just the kind of attachment to a possibly ubiquitous new trend technology that could give 3D a much needed injection of vitality! I'm seeing kids in the back seat watching cartoons and CGI in 3D, teens watching 3D music vid's on the go, even product rep's giving on the spot 3D presentation or demonstration. I have an Archos AV500 and have pretty much used it for just about all this and more. It's my 2nd PMP and it goes with me everywhere. I use it in the car,(it has pretty much my whole music collection on it) I use it to transfer large amounts of data between home and work, I use it on my motorcycle to record helmet cam footage, (stereo helmet cam is the current project) I've got all my new daughter's pictures and video on it which I will invariably force you to look at some time or other, and of course quite a few shows and videos including some product demonstration footage. It will output to standard inputs, so it's good for TV HMD's on the go. Only drawback I'm seeing is the PMP's not capable of converting images itself, so they must be pre-converted to lenticular seperation formatted to the particular PMP's screen size and resolution. PC software for the owner to use to format their content would be a must. |

Thanks for posting this Joseph - I'm the founder of Neovision Labs and wanted to chime in. First up - iFusion is NOT based on lencticular overlays, it's a lot better than that and offers full resolution for each eye. Also, converting images and video for either parallax barriers or lenticular sheets wouldn't work anyway since the JPEG or MPEG compression eats the interlaced format alive and turns it into mud. More details to follow in the coming weeks - can't disclose too much for now for IP reasons. And no - it's not vaporware and it's not some PR scam either ;-) I agree with your POV about 3D on the go - not everyone is going to be interested in that, but the kids sure seem to love it (based on our internal tests). The PMP market is exploding right now and the resolutions on those devices are only getting better. We are really looking forward to being able to offer iFusion to anyone feeling passionate about 3D and we want to encourage everyone to start creating their own 3D content. 3D was always relegated to a niche market and we are determined to change that rapidly and put 3D in the hands of the everyday consumer. I will be in touch as things unfold and we are able to share more details. |

Nice to hear from you, and hope we won't have to wait too long. Rest assured, the younger generations have always been, and will continue to be the driving force behind all portable media trends. Even though it's usually not their money that gets spent on it! The only thing I didn't hear you say was "Yes, you will be able to convert your footage and view it on your AV500.". I've viewed some stereo content on it, in anaglyph and pairs(page flipping not an option, it'll barely manage 30fps)and resolution is not an issue. The parallax on the other hand, needs to be seriously adjusted to be noticeable at this size. |

Yes, parallax is an issue and I actually had some discussions with several content producers about that. You make a movie to be shown on the big screen and it turns out that the parallax is not sufficient on a small device. However, the fact that iFusion is full resolution per each eye seems to make a difference - the eye is able to use almost all of its 2 arcsecond worth of 3d depth perception and realizes more depth, if that makes any sense. I did some tests on the Archos 640 and am very happy with the results - love the LCD on that one. Also bear in mind that PMPs increasingly start to blend with portable gaming devices - for instance I see more and more Flash Light support. The future of stereo 3D in my mind is in gaming - that's what the kids want anyway. |
