Folks:

I am trying to take 3D interlaced .avi files, add audio from a separate stream (since Stereo Movie Maker takes the audio out), and burn the final product to DVD without losing the interlacing. I have always disabled de-interlacing, but I keep having problems with this.

I am using Nero 7 Ultra Edition, and while I got ONE test to work properly, only the first .avi file was 3D and then it switched to deinterlaced video on the second and succeeding chapters/clips. I am doing this using Nero's "Make a movie" option. Perhaps I am not using the correct settings (like sample method--automatic, bottom field first, top field first, no interlacing)? Nero Recode keeps crashing on me, so I am not sure if that application could help or not. Any suggestions for other routes or software greatly appreciated!

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Problems w/ too many passwords. ;)

My suggestion is to NOT use Nero for encoding. It's neither versatile nor robust. Burning discs is another matter--that's what it does best!.
Use Mainconcept or TMPGEnc encoders. You can specify interlaced and they'll give you interlaced (at very good quality).
Check out videohelp.com for more info on these encoders, etc.

HTH,
Scott

I got ahold of a program called Digital Media Converter, which seems to have corrected the problem. Nero wont de-interlace if the .avi files are preformatted to DVD-compliant mpegs, which is what DMC is doing. But thanks for the suggestion on TMPGEnc--I looked into that as well but the DMC program seems to have more bells and whistles.

NOW, however, I am wondering if anyone can tell me of a good program that will take many .avi files and join them together seamlessly into one long .avi file. I tried this with the .mpeg files that i first converted from those .avi files on Nero (i know, i know), but at the very beginning and end of each clip, there is loud screeching/distortion, and also momentary blackout between each clip, and of course the sound doesn't match up, i thnk because the mpeg video files are now spaced with the blackout, so the sound isn't in sync....

DMC has a clean interface and is good at accepting different formats, but it lacks many major options I would expect to have available when making DVDs.
The 2 encoders I already mentioned are about as full-featured as encoders get--that includes assembling/concatenating source files.
If you need to edit/assemble finished MPEG files, programs such as Cuttermaran or Womble MPEGeditor might do the trick. But perhaps it would be better to get a real good standard NLE app to start with (Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Ulead MSP, Canopus Edius, Avid Xpress).

Your problem is certainly fixable with the right tools.

Scott
