New to the editing process, I have a NuView lens and Final Cut Express HD. Is there a way to edit footage NuView into anaglyph with this alone? I don't have access to a PC (so I can't run stereo movie maker). I've experimented but all come out blurry, I think it has to do with the interlacing? But being new to the process, I don't understand how to separate it (or how it works with NuView). I have access to After Effects 6.5, but I have never used this program. Is it possible with just these two programs? I wish to upload to YouTube, so compression is also a factor. Is there a web site with info for the newbe on editing NuView with a mac? Many thanks and I look forward to hearing back! |

Oh, and is there a rule of thumb when compressing anaglyph NuView mpeg4 for YouTube? My few tests have resulted in double the blurring! Thanks again in advance. |

If you have access to AfterEffects, you'll be fine with converting just with that app alone, then you can edit with FCP... You'll first need to learn how to use AE before trying something, but it has to do with using nested compositions and masks. (I have a previous post on this particular subject in these forums). However, if you have the storage space and don't want to fully learn AE before digging in, you could just try this in FCP: Load a clip, DeInterlace Keeping Odd Fields (no interpolation) and then render this file as "My clip".L Do it again, but this time DeInterlace Keeping Even Fields (again with no interpolation) and render to "My clip".R Start a new project, adding both of these newly rendered pieces of media. Put *.L on the timeline and then put *.R on the track immediately above, synced up at the same spots in time. Whenever you make an edit, make sure it is equally affecting BOTH tracks. When you're done with edits, apply a CYAN filter to *.R track and a RED filter to the *.L track. Also, make the top track (the *.R) is 50% opacity. Render this to your finished file. If this doesn't look correct to you (L/R could be reversed), swap which filter is being applied to which tracks and render again. Try this all out with a short clip first... That will at least get you started. Scott |

Many Thanks Scott! I got it to work! ( with a big "But......") I captured my NuView clip in Final Cut and duplicated it - applied the 'Nattress G smart De-Interlacer' filter to each clip, top clip as 'upper, second' & bottom clip as 'lower, second' and applied RGB changes (and opacity to top) as described. The anaglyph worked, but was far too subtle when exported to QT so I decided to tackle After Effects (though I have never used it before). I exported the raw interlaced clips one at a time from Final Cut (with the de-interlace filter changes intact) and brought them both into After Effects. With a lot of fumbling, I figured out how to open both clips in compose and apply the '3D Glasses' filter (left eye bottom/ right eye top) - looked real good! I then exported it from AE as both DV Stream and MPEG-4 30 frame with 640x480 progressive settings for upload to YouTube. Here's the NEW RUB! The image online looks like total crap! As if it is being viewed through an empty jelly jar... Saved as interlaced version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNUid3RVb50 Saved as progressive version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6fUIh9vRBk I even tried importing the DV stream footage back into Final Cut and making the MPEG-4 from there, but I keep getting the same thing. It looks clean when I play it on the desktop but not online - this is AE DV exported from Final Cut http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agX6V5cNPzU I even uploaded the raw DV stream to YouTube with no quality difference. Any ideas on what is going wrong? I can't figure it out. The original footage is rather 'soft' to begin with (though I don't know why - maybe the lens is softening the image quality too much for YouTube??! But it plays/looks clean and unblurry on the desktop.... I'm stumped. Thanks much for all the help, it is exciting I can get it converted - Any thoughts on the compression problem (if that's it)? |

It could be that even though your deinterlacer is supposed to be completely throwing out 1 field and basing decisions about interpolation on only the remaining field, it might still be using the discarded field as reference. That would be bad in the case of stereoscopic perspective. There is a Mac app called "MovieTools" that has a form of deinterlacing which could work for you (possibly better IN THIS REGARD than what you're currently using-I realize the Nattress is quite good normally). (It's a pre-OSX app though...) I'm seeing a "flicker" which probably has something to do with the framerate--although the light level shouldn't vary. Of course, converting from 1 bandwidth-limited version of 3D (framerate/Vrez) to another type of bandwidth-limited 3D (colorspace) will always result in double the loss of quality. I work with full-quality separate L and R streams (from separate cams), so this doesn't happen to me. One thing to try, since you're sharing via YouTube which won't normally be full-screen, is to downrez your master first. Since a deinterlace is going to give you an effective Vrez of 240, why not just keep it there and make your Hrez it's equivalent (aka 320)? This might help with avoiding interpolation errors being carried over into the next stage of compression--which might be giving you that "jamjarglass" effect. Lots of things to try... HTH, Scott |

Thanks for the help! I did try changing the de-interlacing and the export footage looks slightly cleaner for sure.( I can't use the 'movietools' as my mac is intel and not able to run classic. ) So I reverted back to the built in FC de-interlacer. I just uploaded my latest test, still waiting for it to show up on YouTube, but the QT movie looks pretty good. I took some screen shots of this footage and posted them here: http://www.wildbunchcarclub.com/kstuff.html you can see the YouTube footage at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwRiby4PM04 The flicker maybe a bigger problem - I found that the two fields have very different color tints. On the web page I posted side by side images... I guess the lens itself is causing the problems. Anyway, I still have to try the downrezing of the master, it sounds very reasonable that that would be the fly in the ointment... Yep, I really opened a can of worms on myself with this FS to anaglyph. Man, this is brain kicking! Thanks again for the tips and tricks, will experiment with them all.. |
