I had the pleasure to see Beowulf this afternoon at our local IMAX theater. I've seen several other IMAX movies in the past but I have to say I was completely blown away by this film in both content and 3-D. Mine is just a small opinion amongst many but I'd highly recommend this to any 3-D fan. My only gripe is a technical one as one of the projectors had a slight flicker in the right eye but only in very bright scenes (it was polarized). I'm definitely shelling out more cash to see this again (plus to score some more glasses for my rig - I didn't know they ask you to just throw them away now! I would've raided the trash!). Anyone else see it yet? Opinions? |

Yeah, I went to see this in digital 3d last night. Amazing experience. The movie itself was decent, not as good as 300, but still action packed. The 3d effect was great. It had a very natural 3d perspective, not like the "wow, bats are flying out of the screen" 3d effect used in old horror movies. This is a landmark movie for the progression of stereo 3d. Anyone involved in this forum is pretty much obligated to go see it. I recommend seeing this at an IMAX theater if possible. I saw it at a digital3d screen, which was good, but the 3d effects is much more impressive when the screen fills your field of view. Overall a very exciting experience, I can't wait for the other 3d movies to come out (Avatar, etc.). Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see a bunch of regular people at the theater. Families, couples, not just a bunch of VR nerds (no offense). Seeing some hot girl asking her boyfriend for the 3d glasses was so funny. If they bring out more movies like this maybe they can get rid of the stigma of 3d being only for hardcore nerds. Also, the RealD glasses they are using now are actually pretty slick looking for throwaways. They've got that blues brothers look to them and are surprisingly stylish and well made. I picked up an extra pair (unopened) just for collectors value. You never know. |

Yes. With Real-D under normal conditions flicker should not happen. But it is quite possible to have flicker, given the Real-D theatrical format alternates at 144hz. If the system is not working properly (and I've seen it happen) flicker can be a side effect. |

I was guessing the flicker was from a projector bulb about to go bye-bye (the flickering occurred only around the bottom half of the screen) as it wasn't constant or at a consistant rate but someone with a little more tech knowledge about IMAX theaters and projecters might want to correct me. I went back last night and it had the same problem but I didn't pay attention to it as much. The movie was just as good the second time |

I saw it today in RealD 3D and it was awsome!! I plan to see it in IMAX too, as well as see as much as possible before it leaves theatres. Hopefully they'll release it in some 3D version for the home video market like anaglyph or field sequential but that's a long shot. The trailer for 'Journey 3D' looked very cool! Can't wait to see a 3D film that has some live action and is not complete CG. It would be neat to see some films from the 50's & 80's on today's digital 3D format. |

I saw Beowulf in Digital-3D at the Cinemagnum in Frankfurt, Germany. This is a former IMAX-3D theater which went out of business. It's now turned into a Digital-3D theatre. They're using two Christie's DLP projectors and large IMAX-style polarization glasses. So the field of view is smaller than with IMAX, but the screen is still larger than in conventional theatres. So this theatre is a hybrid between IMAX and a digital theatre if you will. Try it if you happen to be in Frankfurt. There was much less ghosting than in the past when it was IMAX-3D. I think this is due to several factors: new screen (probably), less light, low contrast (in Beowulf) and less out-of-screen effects (in Beowulf). In IMAX-3D you ususally have dust and scratches and sometimes small sync-issues, due to past film-jams where the film had to be cut and merged again. Digital solves these issues. I'm very happy with this movie. They did it right, especially there are not many out-of-screen effects. Virtually noone could stand a 140 minute movie with the amount of out-of-screen images used in most 40 minute IMAX3D movies, without serious headaches. This is something I was arguing about for years now. What I'm now waiting for is a good live-action feature and IMAX-3D going digital. I'm pretty sure some old 3D-movies will make it to Digital-3D-theatres for various reasons. The movies of the 50's bear great names - Alfred Hitchcock, John Wayne, Jerry Lewis and others. They are shot in color and 35mm or better. They are shot specifically in and for 3D. Futhermore the studios have to restore and digitize their archives anyway. Christoph |

I hope you're right Chris, about the studios remastering the old 3d classics. Most of those movies are before my time, but I did see Alfed Hitchcock's The Birds in 3d (over at Universal Studios, not sure if thats still running). I'm hoping for more action films, all they seem to make these days (for IMAX3D) is documentary and kids films. Thats cool an all, but we need more action. A little nudity never hurt either. Anyone else hear the rumors of Quinten Tarinteno working on a 3d porno? |

'The Birds' was never shot in 3D. Was it a conversion or do you mean 'Dial M for Murder'? |

I'm sorry, it wasn't the entire film, just a remade scene with Hitchcock's Birds. It was part of an Alfred Hitchcock attraction that is no longer running. The 3d segment was probably only like 5 minutes long, but was pretty amazing when I saw it (lots out out-of-screen effects done well). They also had props and sets from Psycho in the building that now houses the Shrek 4-D exhibit at Universal Studios florida. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Hitchcock:_The_Art_of_Making_Movies (Message edited by cybereality on November 24, 2007) |

Christoph: I applaud your idea of old 1950's 3-D movies being re-released in digital 3-D format, but I think that's very unlikely. If the major studios decide to jump on the current 3-D bandwagon (as they did after small studios started the 3-D crazes of 1953 and 1983), they're more likely to create new 3-D movies tailored to 21st-century tastes. I remember the press releases of the 50's and 80's proclaiming, "Finally 3-D is here to stay." Unfortunately, 3-D movies have always proved to be a transient fad that most American moviegoers quickly tire of, once the initial novelty wears off. New movie technologies like sound and then color gradually became the expected standard because those innovations didn't require active audience participation (that is, wearing special glasses). Until the day comes when 3-D movies are glasses-free, they will never consistently attract more than a niche crowd of 3-D advocates like the members of this forum. |

Charles, I agree with your point about mass adoption of the 3d movie format, but only to a certain extent. If there is enough content by the likes of Robert Zemeckis and other A-list directors, I think the market will follow. This would still be a niche market, similar to the current HD market, but as long as they continue to support the digital-3d standard I will be happy. Of course 3d without the glasses would be ideal, but we are years away from any type of practical and economical holographic public displays. We should be content with where the market is heading right now and try to promote it in any way we can. It has to start somewhere. |

I honestly don't want 3D movies to become standard because then we would take them for granted. They would become as common as flat films. It would take away the fun and excitement of going to see a 3D movie. That's just my opinion. |

Yes, of course it's easy to get used to good things. You easily get used to photographs, moving pictures, sound, color, high-definition and even 3D. You realize what you're missing when you go back. Christoph |

I thought the 3D was great, and the battle with the dragon was probably the best part, but the way Angelina Jolie was portrayed was rather silly in my opinion. I mean, high heel feet? Not shoes, but feet. If this movie had been made by the people that made the Lord of the Rings movies using live actors combined with special effects, I think it would have been much better. At this point, I'm going to see many of these movies because of the new technology, but I long for the day when I can enjoy one not just for the effects, but because it's a great movie. For this one, once was enough. (Message edited by LAdude on January 08, 2008) |

I love this movie! I've seen it six times since it's been out (once in IMAX 3D, five times in digital 3D)and i never get sick of it. I'll see it as many times as i can before it leaves the theatres. I'm sure a field sequential version will never make it to DVD so i'll relish every viewing until it's gone. I doubt it will ever be shown in 3D again but who knows. Anyone else as obsessed as i am? |

It will come out in 3d at some point (probably not day-and-date with the regular dvd). I have heard some rumors of 3d blu-ray discs (full HD dual video streams), this would be a perfect showcase if they ever bring that stuff to market. |
