I recently discovered that the two 3D Stooges shorts on this disk (Pardon My Backfire and Spooks) were HORRIBLY encoded on this disk! The rest of the disk appears to be in progressive format, while these two shorts are interlaced....why they did this is anyone's guess, but no biggie, right? WRONG. If you have this piece of carp, look closely (if it wasn't already obvious) at the quality of the video....it looks like an amateur had some interlace setting set wrong when they rendered this. There is a horrible shaky graininess and mice teeth like I've never seen before. You would think an outfit like Sony Pictures would have professional people behind their projects--this looks like something one of their summer interns did! Granted, these almost look okay on my 19" CRT from 1992, but anything else makes it really obvious that something was screwed up.

The 2D versions of these on the same disk look very crisp and clean and are presented in progressive format.

But that's not all...heralded was the fact that these were widescreen releases....well, yes and no....the original aspect ratio was 4:3, but they 'lettercropped' them to make them look widescreen...in other words, they chopped much of the frame out to make widescreen versions....these were NOT originally filmed in widescreen...they did an okay job with the conversion, but coupled with the horrible interlace job done on the 3D versions, I'm REALLY po'd about this release to say the least.

I wrote Sony about this--I suggest you do the same if you have this set so that Sony does a better job of this sort of thing in the future. Hopefully, someone will lose their job over this and one of US will get hired to do things right!

Their customer service addy is:

consumer@sphecustomersupport.sony.com

P.S.: If anyone else has this disk and doesn't see what I am talking about, please let us know--maybe I got a defective copy and they caught the errors afterwards...will post back if I hear from Sony on the issue.

Aren't the Stooges 3-D shorts on the Sony commercial DVD in anaglyph format? The commercial DVD package includes two sets of (presumably anaglyph) 3-D glasses.

yes they are. I am not talking about field-sequential interlacing--just standard NTSC interlacing...in any event, the quality of these two shorts is really horrendous...i have since found others complaining about it as well...compare and contrast:

Also, the stills don't do the flaws justice...the 'mice teeth' actually shake/vibrate, making the video even WORSE than it appears in the stills above.

In any event the 3D does ultimately work on these--i'm just bummed it wasn't cleaner.
