Well, we got Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in bluray 3D...if you bought the Samsung 3D kit, you got Monsters vs. Aliens...WhereTF are the rest??? Christmas Carol is coming out in November...that's a HECK of a LONG time between releases to support the hardware...even when you count the overseas releases (Grand Canyon Adventure, which is another lame IMAX doc, some of which isn't even 3D, and some dance flick I never heard of coming out in December in Germany), this really doesn't seem like enough to stir the people to buy the equipment, no? I get the feeling there will be a handful of titles released and then home 3D will go the way of the VHD system of the 80s...anyone ELSE know of any other Blu-Ray 3D titles coming out that perhaps I am missing? Even BEYOND the Christmas Carol release (which is probably coming out overseas again before the US release...ANOTHER major annoyance!)?

I almost bought a Panasonic Blu-Ray 3D player (one of the two models that output checkerboard for my 2007 Samsung HDTV), but not with the lame selection of titles that I have already converted to field-sequential and above/below for viewing on my current system...at this point I don't see any reason to buy the player, and especially not to get a new 3D-ready TV...that also seems to be the attitude on the various 3D forums and to those i've spoken to in real life...this isn't going to fly!

The number of available Blu-ray 3D movies reflects the number of 3D movie releases in cinemas with the appropriate delay. Yeah not really a shitload of movies, but ifyou compare with the 90s the amount of 3D movies made this year already surpassed the whole decade of the 90s, so i think it's really not the moment to be angry.

Yeah they probably could have converted all the old movies they have like MetalStorm, Jaws 3D, Comin at Ya and so on, but somehow I'm glad they didn't as a shitty conversion would prolly not have done 1080p x 2 justice. If you were even close to a 3D movie collector you'd be drooling - for me this year got me more material for my collection (Yeah some that is obviously NOT yet released officially, but a collector wont care) than the past 15 years together already - and the year ain't over yet.

Although 2010 initialized another "golden age" of 3D I also refrain from buying a 3D TV as imho the ones offered as "3D" TV are just simple TFT with a 10$ shutterglasses thrown into the box. The most that is "3D" about these new "3D TVs" is that their firmware can convert a few 3D formats - at least some of them have that. I am having shutterglasses since the mid 80s and i dont know why i should spend a few grand to get a new pair of shutterglasses as science's latest invention regarding 3D.

I have recently seen an awesome autostereoscopic 3D screen with parallax barrier and it featured a built-in Camera that tracks your eyes and adjusts the parallax barrier if you move your head. Still costs a fortune and is only interesting with a PC, but imma wait until this tech has advanced a bit, until that i stick to my old Sharp RD1-3D to enjoy movies without glasses. Not HD, but fair enough and glasses free.

Well - with time 3D will come. that's for sure. But don't bet on being an early adopter being the wisest choice, no electronic appliance is as old as the one you're just carrying out of the store...

I already knew that article, but i think it might be a bit exaggerating. While exclusivity deals of course affect title availability these are usually limited to a few months. Yeah in the beginning this looks bad, but die hard customers can get all discs from ebay or even download them (Yeah some people DO download 50 GIG movies). And even though 3D TV sales arent THAT enormous yet i think many people will wait a few more month for a price drop and then automatically have more titles available. There will also be much more 3D animated movies as for every 3D animated movie you basically just need to re-render it with a modified camera setting to have it in stereoscopic 3D. And movies that are currently in teh cinema or announced will also come to BD3D sooner or later. Unlike VHD the BD3D is unlikely to be "deserted" as Blu-Ray is already the next de facto standard for movies and the difference between a Blu-Ray player and a Blu-Ray 3D player is the firmware. The difference between a 120 Hz TV and a 120 Hz 3D TV is the firmware. My 10 cents would be that most brands will come with 3D firmwares soon.

in the states, the 3D boom doesn't really seem to be taking off...I found Monster House 3D Tuesday at a Best Buy...it was buried beneath a Sony TV display and they had two whole copies available..I almost left without buying it because I assumed they didn't have any.

On the other hand, Sony FINALLY published the firmware for the Playstation 3 (it's on the Monster House 3D disk), so that is good news...but WTH took so long???

Well the 3D boom is quite expensive and also going on since a few month, so the hardcore early adopters are already served and the rest is waiting for prices to drop...

With VHD it was a rather weird format and the VHD discs were neither very handy nor too affordable - for Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray 3D i think very soon "3D" will be a feature that is gonna be embedded if you want it or not.

Why it took sony so long i can't say. Maybe they wanted to make sure its working fine, very compatible (hopefully) and not a target for the next "hack" or "jailbreak". They are one of the very few companies that has an own MVC encoder and Blu-Ray 3D authoring program...Maybe the programmers there were still busy with bugfixes and stuff for the softs they already released... But im just guessing here.

Anyways, the 3D pipelines in Hollywood are looking better than ever before, i don't think in any "boom age" of 3D there had been so many 3D movies announced, so maybe a tad early to be too pessimistic.

The wiki page is a bit outdated, but still a good source of info.

But the titles I have seen so far look pretty good:

Imax Into the Deep
Coraline
Deep Sea 3D
Mummies
Galapagos 3D
Monster House
Monsters vs. Aliens
Grand Canyon Adventure
Under the Sea 3D
Alice in Wonderland (looked better than expected!)
Clash of the Titans (also looks better than expected)
My Bloody Valentine
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Ice Age 3 looked flat to me for the most part :-(

Waiting on Street Dance 3D and Bolt!

Much much prefer the Imax and live action stuff...now where are the classics from the 1950s and the near-classics from the 1980s????

I liked all the computer animated movies: Cloudy, Monsters vs Aliens, Coraline, How to train your Dragon, Ice AGe 3, Toy STory 3 and Bolt. If found Ice AGe as great as all the others besides the baby part of the story was seriously annoying. The really ran out of ideas. But the 3D is great, i was rather disappointed by Clash of the titans which i found terribly flat, but then again i wasnt aware its a conversion when i watched it. For Alice in Wonderland the 3D animated scenes and figures looked great, but īmost live action was very flat.

I really still cross my fingers for a release of Pixar's "Up" and the 3D Version of "Nightmare before christmas". I really wonder why they did not already slaughter the 3D cow here, did the studios forget how money is made? Also it's ridiculous that the new Garfield movie was only released on anaglyph DVD... Helloooooo??? ALso Where's Space Chimps 2 and Fly me to the moon? I have only seen anaglyph releases - is there some detail about "Blu-ray 3D" that i missed?

I hope they consider re-rendering older 3D animated movies like The first few ice ages, toy stories and so on.

has anyone read anything positive about how well the 3D sales are doing (disks and TVs/blu-ray players?). here are some that popped up when i googled 3d tv sales:

http://www.bnet.com/blog/gadget-guy/3d-tv-prices-slashed-sales-lower-than-expected/1226

http://www.i4u.com/44250/3d-tv-sales-are-way-low-what-can-ces-do-change-it

http://connectedplanetonline.com/residential_services/news/Expected-3DTV-fizzles-as-sales-remain-low-1228/

these were near the top of the search results and are fairly pessimistic.

Not to mention that the terms 'converted' or 'remastered' are euphemisms.

One can't really 'convert' from 2D to 3D.
They actually 'build' something by hand (with some computer aid) and this something can be anything.

No.

A high quality glasses free large screen consumer product, take your pick, Dolby, Sony, Toshiba, Philips... will deliver the interest back. http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/17/2955185/dolby-glasses-free-3d-prototype-philips-hands-on

Now, yes 4K is all the rage this year. 4K is also the enabler of the above. Why? Because now all our old Blu-Ray content, players, etc. are obsolete and will have to be replaced. Those 4K first generation things too. $$$

My guess; it will all be cloud or protected flash based media, not Blu-Ray.
