Quick review on the latest 3D cartoon from Disney. Tangled is probably the most artistic 3D ever made. Colors are bright 'watercolors', if that term fits; the film was hand drawn animation with computer fills. The 3D was basically perfect; well planned, giving only enough effect to remind you what it is. It's immersive enough that most of the time you forget it's 3D, and that's by design. This is as good as we have right now; better than How To Train Your Dragon, and that's saying something. From the previews, it looks like Mars Needs Moms may raise the bar yet again; facial tones in Twisted are intentionally cartoon, but Mars Needs Moms has better 3D skin tones than Christmas Carol, and this is totally generated. Quite impressive. I would review the new Narnia (running a theater does give perks) but I signed a waver to see it last week. The bar is going way up on these as the directors are understanding what 3D is and what it is not. These are art. Larry |
