I know lots of ideas have been passed around on similar subjects, but I'd like to see what people think of this one: What if I bought a 8-button floor-pad like the DDR Nation OEM Ignition Pad (v2.5) with a PC adapter: http://www.ddrnation.com/dx.htm and use it as a directional pad for movement in games with my feet? I know what you're thinking: But if you turn your head (tracked by the z800), then then the "forward" button on the floor directional pad will no longer be "forward" anymore in the game! However, what if you could use the z800 SDK or perhaps some other software that keeps track of which way you're facing and automatically "remaps" the floor buttons as you turn? For example, say you're pressing the forward floor button to run forward in the game and then turn your head 90 degrees to the right. Then, the software would remap the forward floor button the "strafe left" button in real time. Then, in the game, you would continue moving in the same direction as you look and shoot to your right. This would effectively give you a semi-natural feeling of body and head movement in the game without expensive lateral-shift tracking sensors. I realize that the z800 gyroscopes would have to have very little drift ofver tim for this to work also. But what do you think of the idea overall? Is there a better way to do it? As I understand it, the the other means to do track latereal shifts aren't the greatest. You can use accelometers, but the drift is bad. You could use the trackIR, but you've not free to rotate that far. Or you could use a camera system and visual markers on the ceiling (expensive?). Ooo... I just had another idea, what if you mapped the trackIR on the ceiling (instead of infront of you) and shifted the axes by 90 degrees? Will the trackIR software let you do this? |

I was thinking along the same lines. I want to make PC FPS less sedentary but not be out of reach for most budgets. The problem is...will it catch on beyond the wii players to the pc gamers who care more about competition & score than the fun of the game play experience. Free air aiming is not anchored like a mouse so it's not as accurate unless you are steady...but it's a lot more fun. Fps with a controller is also not as accurate as a mouse but it's not more fun..it's more annoying than anything. Maybe if the analog sticks had the fidelity of a nice RC controller it would be ok. Stand up, move around gaming is the next level. I have created the perfect gun for FPS...hopefully I will get it to market sooner than later and not cost a ridiculous $585 like on virtual realities site. With a price like that it's no wonder the general PC fps gaming population wont be dropping their mouse just yet. |
