This company has produced an API for head tracking. Their sample video shows a very nice demo of a guy viewing a realtime rendering as he moves around. Fishtank VR is what this is called.

I am quite surprised this sort of thing was not done years ago, and used on products like Solidworks or Pro-Engineer.

One other recent development of interest, (I was going to put it on the new producs board, but it seems to be locked and prevents me from posting). The Z-Cam is a camera capable of time-of flight measurement of depth for every pixel (640x480). Furthermore they are planning on selling it later this year for under $100 for gamers. I think this is a groundbreaking new product for telepresence. http://www.3dvsystems.com
